FiiO K1--smaller and better for less

Jan 15, 2016 at 9:03 PM Post #181 of 408

I find that the K1 is substantially less warm than my Dragonfly 1.2.  It's a little on the bright side of flat, which is great for hearing all the detail in its nice wide sound stage.  However, I find that the bass lacks the 3D feel of the Dragonfly.  While I still would recommend it for the 6P (it's better than cranking up the gain), the advise about the right headphones is good.  My M50x's sound ok from a bass perspective with it, but my Klipsch R6i's w/ foam tips (which are bass heavy) sound better.

Really hard to tell.  Over the weekend I updated my wife's Nexus 7 tablet (2nd gen HD) with 6.0 Marshmallow, and it still doesn't work with K1.  While others reported their phones working without a problem...  So, you can't just generalize that ANY phone or tablet with 6.0 going to pair up with K1, it's all hardware dependent...

Hi,
I got it to work, but if you have the volume right up it would cut out and said it exceeded the power limit.  I think you need a usb hub in between to get around this.  I am hoping that the new L19 FiiO cable may fix this whenever it finally comes out.
The L19 technically isn't Fiio, and they aren't releasing it. Its sitting around in the warehouse of the company who made it because its not certified or something. I only remember bits and pieces of what the Fiio dude said but yeah.

it works with iPhone 6s plus and iPad Air 2 with the Apple Camera Connection Kit. But it did not work with my iPhone 5/5s or the iPad Air...though it should've worked (at least with the 5s), according to one of the comments Fiio made on their facebook page. Another user reported the K1 worked with the iPad Mini...So it might work with your iPhone 6 but there's no guarantee.

I'm looking to buy this.
I would love to have a very low distortion amd&dac, since when I connect my shure se315 to my laptop, there's an almost deafening hiss.

So is this amp without distortion?

Agree with the fact it doesn't work with the 5S but it plays fine with an iPhone 6. Above is a picture of the fiio with my custom camera connection cable, the fiio is fastened to the back of the phone with a magnet. I will eventually tidy up the shrink wrap on the cable.

Soundwise with my Oppo PM3s and R2As the K1 is perfect, I think it would struggle to drive anything more demanding though.

Care to elaborate on that cable? Looks small, convinient, and lovely. CCK is too chunky :/

It's fairly straight forward, I noticed that in the cheap knock off chinese CCKs had a larger white plastic bit compared with the genuine apple version. I dismantled the cable and noticed the chip in the plug itself. I was then just a simple case of soldering on the cables of a micro usb lead to complete the cable.

The black rubber bulb is just Sugru the moulding rubber stuff to protect the flimsy usb cables.

I wasn't sure if it was common knowledge about the Chinese CCK cables and whether other people had made their own mini CCKs or not - if it's not I might post up a thread when I make my next one.

Here's a picture of  another one I made for the E17K before I sent it back.

What were you using the E17K with (with the lightning connector).  Extremely interested if I could get it to work with an iPhone 5S.

Yes, the E17K worked fine with that cable - maybe had to replug it a couple of times if it was being stubborn - I also sometimes got Bravo-USB instead of E17K but again replug and it went back to how it should.

I used a ipod classic flip case with magnets and a bit of tweaking to mount it to the 5S without scratching the DAC.

The Fiio Q1 worked fine with is 5S as well.
