I thought that I would mention that it isn't just Fiio that is having problems with Windows 8/8.1. It seems that the HDVD800 also had some problems with it too. I forget what the problem was though. Perhaps looking into that will help?

One thing I could suggest is to hunt around in BIOs and look at the settings for your USB ports. Older machines can have problems with Windows 8/8.1 because the hardware is configured weird.

I brought my fiio e10 back from work today.
The e10 is working without problems.

Can confirm that crash on Windows 8. I haven't upgradet to Windows 8.1. I get an error saying something along the lines of "driver security fail".
 
Now running it without the driver in hope that it won't crash again.
 
It was connected to USB 2.0
