[FiiO BTR3K] Balanced High-Fidelity Bluetooth Amp(Questionnaire About Upgrading the BTR3K updated in 2023-6-14)
Oct 19, 2021 at 5:20 AM Post #286 of 403
I seem to have lost my ES100 and need a replacement. I generally use an iPhone or watch TV using an AppleTV.
2 questions:
1 - how is audio lag for TV watching?
2 - how functional is the FiiO app? I really liked the EQ function of the Radsone app?
1. I tried the BTR5 with the Xiaomi TV, and the lag is not noticeable.
2. The EQ could be switched via both the BTR5 and the APP.

Best regards

I'm a heavy EQ user, and from what I've read, ES100's EQ application is way better. The EQ function on FiiO works but it isn't very accurate. Just turning it on in the app colors the sound with all the sliders set flat. It's certainly not parametric, either.

I don't notice any lag on my laptop when connected via LDAC, but on my old android phone with BT 4.2, there is maybe 25-75ms when connected via SBC. Tolerable for most stuff on YT.

Other than those two small things, I absolutely adore the BTR3k and would quickly buy another if something happened to it. Be aware that the DAC maxes out at 16 bit and 44 kHz. BTR5 is 24bit, but it has ESS DAC whereas the BTR3k has AKMs. It sounds absolutely fantastic, and I can't tell a difference from 24bit and redbook audio, anyway.

I had been set to buy either an ES100 or BTR5 as my primary device but I ended up liking the sound on this thing so much that I just didn't bother. fwiw.

Thanks for the answers.
I’m not concerned with bitrate. As far as the equalizer, I’m not concerned with the “purity” of the sound, just that I can adjust it.
If I dont find my es100 soon, this may be my replacement.

I have the ES100 and the BTR3K. There are pros and cons to each one, but they both sound great to me, and I pretty much use them interchangeably. One thing is the BT range: the BTR3K is better than the ES100. Also when the ES100 is covered up at all, it tends to lose the connection, but that doesn't happen with the BTR3K. Also, the BTR3K seems to be built a lot better. It's great value.

Thanks for the answers.

With the BTR3K, you can't EQ when using LDAC. Hopefully some day:

EQ invalid in LDAC codec】
It is not a hardware defect. Since the audio processing of LDAC is more special than other Bluetooth formats, we are still doing related debugging, and striving to achieve the same effect as other Bluetooth formats, but it will take a certain amount of time.

Will this save any custom EQ settings you make on the app and still apply them when connected to other devices? For example if I set a custom EQ on the Fiio app on my phone, disconnect the two, and then connect the BTR3K to my Walkman will the EQ settings remain?

Yes the EQ settings remain in tht same position. It doesn't support saving multiple custom settings, however. If you want to adjust between headphones you need to do it manually each time. There are multiple presets available by music genre but they are garbage imo. I wish the app would let you overwrite them with custom settings and relabel.

Aside from that, I still love it and use it everyday. It's the size of other dongles but also has a great bt implementation and works well with sensitive IEM, and has a super low noise floor (dead silent, actually).

Good to know about the EQ and your impressions, thanks!

I upgraded from the BTR3 to the BTR3K. The support for inline controls & mic is very welcome.

However, there's a huge drawback in the BTR3K's USB DAC mode. Audio will always fade in from silence, instead of simply playing at full volume.
In the BTR3, you could configure it to stay in USB DAC mode by pressing the power button 3 times - this mode did not fade in audio from silence. I can't find a permanent USB DAC mode in the BTR3K.

I'm not the only one who's noticed the fade-in: https://old.reddit.com/r/FiiO/comments/p9bcd2/btr3k_audio_fading_in_in_usb_dac_mode/

Is there a way to work around or remove the fade-in? Is there a chance the fade-in could be removed in a future firmware upgrade?

@FiiO @FiiO Kang

My beloved BTR3K stopped charging. I tried different chargers and different cables (all of which worked with BTR3K before) - but it still doesn't charge.
Please advise.

I followed the recommendations, and here are the results:

If the device cannot be turned on or charged, it is suggested to follow the tips below to solve it.

1.Try other power adapters and cables.
Tried multiple power adapters and cables

2.The battery of your device may be overused, so it needs to be refreshed through low-current power. Please try to charge the product using the computer for about 30mins, then hold the power button for 30s to force a restart.
I connected it to the laptop for couple of hours. BTR3K wasn't taking in any current during this time.
I held the power button for 30 seconds - BTR3K powered up and then down. Still didn't charge after that.

3. If the above 2 measures cannot help, you can try to leave the device aside for 2 to 3 days unit it is discharged, and then charge it again. Because sometimes its system may be stuck, it would return to normal when the device runs out of power.
I did let the device rest over the weekend, but it didn't help.
It still powers up and shows 20% in the FIIO Control app - should I leave it running so it runs out of battery?

4. If your amplifier(BTR3/BTR5) could be turned on still, please go to FiiO Control and check whether the charge option has been set to 'OFF'.
Charging is set to "On" in the app

I bought it in April 2020, so I guess warranty replacement is out of question...
Wish I'd bought it on Amazon and not Aliexpress - they just issued a 122$ refund on a 512GB SD card I bought in March 2020.
Aliexpress is not accountable for anything two weeks after you get your package.

Wow, "a minimum 2-year legal conformity guarantee from the seller as from the delivery of new goods" does sound good. :beerchug:
But it does come with a 21.5% sales tax automatically collected...

I think I'll just keep buying from Amazon when the product is available.
Ironically, often the prices on Amazon are lower than on AliExpress, they have great sales.
