Ferrum WANDLA - Impressions Thread
Feb 23, 2024 at 6:59 AM Post #691 of 1,166
They are fulfilling orders at the moment and fulfilled the order for my distributor 3 weeks ago. They did have a production slow down Dec Jan but that is now over.

Guys who waited 10-12 weeks got theit units, I was told 3 more weeks after 17 weeks of wait and only when putting a gun to the distributors head via an eBay dispute 😑

Also ultimately I'm not complaining about the wait, but about the lack of honesty and unwillingness to provide any solid information and simply ignoring polite customers. Maybe I should've started threatning the guy ealy and I would get my unit instead of being polite and understanding.
Well a friend is still waiting without a delivery data here in europe.

Sucks with your distributor for sure though.

Your friend should pressure the distributor. As far as I know, Ferrum has approx delivery date for orders that are waiting.

Unfortunately, the distributor (Heiko Boss / Audition 6) I ordered from wasted 17 weeks of my life.
he certainly sells some products of a few companies (ferrum) cheaper then regular retail could keep up with. I imagine/know some of his dealer colleagues don't approve of his style. Had a waiting hiatus with him myself... (called my insurance and his "town office" to find out how to press charges) got my order before I acted though...

I'm extremely excited to announce the WANDLA GoldenSound Edition!

If you're heading to CanJam NYC make sure to stop by the headphones.com booth and have a listen!!

- Elevated digital headroom - Many modern musical tracks are produced in a waythat leaves very little headroom in the recording, often referred to as the Loudness Wars, This can cause clipping and additional distortion during playback on most DACs due to the oversampling filter being unable to accurately reconstruct strong transients. The WANDLA has its own digital processing headroom, but GoldenSound Edition has elevated headroom to accommodate it to its additional DSP functions, which are described in below paragraphs. Therefore, WANDLA GoldenSound Edition is highly immune to intersample overs even in bypass mode at full output level, allowing you to play back any music free from additional distortion, and enjoy a higher quality sound. Moreover, due to its DSP functions, now this sound can be even more tailored to your personal taste.

- Spatial Enhancement - The WANDLA GoldenSound Edition features a unique spatial enhancement that utilizes the power of the Ferrum SERCE module to provide an expanded soundstage and improved clarity of separation between musical elements, whilst avoiding the drawbacks commonly found in other approaches. A Headphone Mode and a Speaker Mode are offered to provide an enhancement tailored to each use-case, and this is achieved without any coloration to the frequency response, no additional distortion, and no tricks like added reverb.

- Tube Mode - The WANDLA GoldenSound Edition features a tube mode, which intentionally increases the even-order harmonic distortion produced by the DAC, similar to the distortion added by a tube amplifier. This allows the user to enjoy a warmer, richer sound without directly changing frequency response, and without the other drawbacks commonly found in tube based devices such as increased noise.

- Hardware Voltage Adjustment - The WANDLA GoldenSound Edition utilizes a new hardware level output voltage adjustment of WANDLA motherboard, allowing the user to swap between just below 10 Vrms output to a just below 4 Vrms output. This is facilitated via a dedicated hardware voltage divider, allowing the user to select this lower output voltage and ensure compatibility with all amplifiers, without needing to use any digital volume control, or have the analog volume control components in the signal path. This feature will also be available on standard edition WANDLA units starting with board revision V4.0.
Revisions older than v4.0 will support this functionality differently. They will use digital attenuation instead.

- Impact + - The WANDLA GoldenSound Edition features an Impact + function for those that enjoy a little more low-end in their music listening experience. Though rather than a basic bass-shelf, this feature uses a customized two-band EQ which not only elevates bass but provides additional punch and dynamic impact.

- No MQA - The WANDLA GoldenSound Edition no longer uses any MQA processing, with all content being kept as untouched PCM other than if you choose to enable one of the sound tuning features. All of DSP functions of WANDLA GoldenSound Edition are extensively using processing power of WANDLA’s SERCE module. Therefore, to ensure seamless operation, MQA decoder is not available in GoldenSound Edition.

The WANDLA GoldenSound edition will be available exclusively at https://headphones.com in North America, and through Ferrum dealers in other regions.
It will retail for $3295. (Estimated, subject to change)
For existing WANDLA owners, a conversion will be available for $600 at a later date.
Conversion means the user will receive a GoldenSound edition firmware, which can be flashed to their WANDLA. This firmware will be specific to their unit and the process of conversion will be reversible

See some of Jude's thoughts in the CanJam preview vid from 17:55 as well!

That is FANTASTIC! The Wandla, an already phenomenal DAC, is only made even better with each of these features.

I know you won’t tie your name to any product you don’t believe in, so this makes me eager to hear (eventually at So Cal CJ)!

Thanks!

It'll definitely be at SoCal as well :) (As will I!)

Does the upgrade require sending Wandla in or is purely software thing which changes how it operates? I’m in Poland so I hope I will be able to do all that locally
There will be no need to send units in, it'll be done via firmware

Great news. Are any of those features included in future firmware update, or are all new features hardware related?
Does the device have to be sent to the factory for mentioned 600$ upgrade?
(…you know, I am fresh Wandla owner…)

Everything is slightly TBD there at the moment, but most likely we are going to be able to do it with software. The only caveat being you won't get the hardware voltage adjustment
Amazing! I’m ready for the upgrade straight away. Though voltage adjustment is what I really need. I’ve made a IEM stack with a portable mass kobo 475, which of course doesn’t take 9.3V:), so I have it at 92volume and -3db dig trim

Haha, apparently you wrote the answer to my questions just at the moment when I wrote my previous post.
Great then!

As much as I am cynical about reviewer/influencer collabs with audio brands (they seem to be a dime-a-dozen in the IEM space), I am quite interested in this GS Wandla. All of the DSP options seem like useful features, while still being options. The changes to volume control are also good design elements that are often overlooked in DACs. And there are few reviewers who I would trust more to get a DAC collab right than GoldenSound.

Are the reconstruction filter options still the same as the regular Wandla, with the options of ESS vs HQ filters? Or is the filter selection limited or altered in the GoldenSound Edition?

Thank you!

Yeah I've turned down collab opportunities before because I didn't feel that what we had the opportunity to develop was actually a better product. I've no interest in slapping my name on something for the sake of it.
This was something where we could really do some beneficial stuff and I'm super excited about it.

The reconstruction filter options are the same as the standard WANDLA, that's an area where Jussi's knowledge and expertise far exceeds my own and so it wouldn't make sense for me to step in on that :)

Sorry to interrupt great GoldenSound news, but I've just installed Stack Audio Auwa EQs anti vibration footers under my Wandla and Hypsos. Very nice sound upgrade (and in my opinion design upgrade too). Recommended.
