Ferrari 250 GTO sold for $28.8 million! - I beg your pardon?

rx7 is a blast to drive, but i think it looks girly. the gt40 otoh is kinda sexy.

one day i'd love to test drive a quad rotary mazda motor driven race car.

for a classic car i'd much rather have an aston martin or a porsche.

The 250GTO cannot be driven. That car is a trailer/garage queen, never to see the open road again. That's sad. And that takes all the value out of it for me. That's like having a house you can't live in or a hamburger you can't eat. What's the point of having it?

But you can take a nice RX-7 all over. Rock chip? No big deal. If it gets stolen or totaled, you can get another one. I've had one (FC3S) for almost five years. I love my other cars, but the RX-7 is special. The Ferrari might beat it on paper, but on one trip, I drove the RX-7 to the Grand Canyon then down deep into southeastern Arizona. That was a great trip. I'll take driving over looking at parked beauty any day.

I have no doubts the RX-7 is a fun and nice car to drive. I was referring only to the looks, but as mentioned earlier, to each his own.

Automotive art...

People pay BIG dollars for paintings.. that don't do anything. The Ferrari looks beautiful even if it isn't moving.

I prefer the brutal, functional lines of the F40 for some reason. The F40 has always been my dream Ferrari.

For this sort of money, I could buy an F40, a 430 Scuderia and a 70's Aston Martin V8 Vantage whilst living in a nice house. But then cars have never been a rational purchase for me.

The price is nuts, but the car is pure sex on wheels from an aesthetic point of view. The GT40 is a racing icon as well and while it is pretty and cool it is nowhere near the same league as the 250 GTO in its original incarnation. If you are lucky you will see a 250 GTO running in some of the heritage grand prix.

I know... I know... but to me, that shape RX7 is one of the best looking cars ever manufactured. From every angle, it looks beautifully poised and well-balanced. It's such a smooth shape, everything just flows effortlessly. It looks masculine as well as feminine - purposeful yet artistic.

One of my all time favourites.

...You could say I have a type. I would do unspeakable things for the 250 or any of the above, perhaps with the exception of the Fairlady, which I'll actually own at some point in my life. That is, without resorting to the aforementioned unspeakable things.

I think I would have gone with something like this and saved the rest of the money for something else. Seems to fit Vipers lineup pretty good, except for the Dino.

2009 Ferrari California
Front mounted V8
Retractable hardtop
Luxury and grunt

makes me drool!
