If you go looking it’s the military marked ones you want to seek out, brown base clear glass. IMHO of course!Do the Brimars need an adapter, or are they drop in ready?
Yup. A long time ago I did buy a pair from these people, NOS and lovely! I have no regrets but you can get a pair cheaper, but they don’t come up often. I recently sold a pair and have two pairs left, and am wrestling with myself as to whether to sell them.
Edit: One pair! I’m not going CV1988’less!
Edit: And that price is per tube!

I will be probably be getting rid of 1 or 2 pair of Melz 1578. Just need to A/B all of them first.
Letting go of tubes is hard!I will be probably be getting rid of 1 or 2 pair of Melz 1578. Just need to A/B all of them first.
Hello everyone,
since i had the opportunity to buy a second hand Susvara a couple of months ago i started trying to find a much better amp to make him shine and after reading this topic i decided to buy an Envy, Performance version. Thanks to your opinions and reviews i can say i'm absolutely thrilled by it. However, i also read all your comments about tube rolling... And now i'm pretty sure i will happily join the Cult of Elrog with a pair of MO, however i would like to have your opinion on the following question. I don't want to fall into the rabbit hole and start tracking down some old driver tubes to replace the PsVane or any kind of tubes using adapters to fit it and would like to know what you would recommend as a good driver tube in combination with the MO that is new from nowadays production.
Thanks a lot for your input, you already been of great help to figure out what i could enjoy as an amp for that wonderful Susvara !
We are in the same situation that I have already decided and as the first pair of top control lamps with MO I want to try Meltz. The backlight I feel that they are getting closer, although I am patiently waiting for this info

Yes you can find cheaper if you look around. Those are from 1952 from the STC factory. Nice tubes. I have multiple pairs of the Brimar 6SN7 and also their 6J5.Yup. Brimar made these tubes for a very long time - from the 1940's until the 1970's. There are many, many different construction differences from different factories (black glass, clear glass, grey plates, black plates, getter, D getter, etc, etc). All are good though - and unlike most tube manufacturers - some would argue their later 1970's tubes are among some of their best. My personal faves? The 1950's clear glass ST 6J5.
I don't own an Envy, but I do like to talk about tubes

For the Susvara in particular I would recommend, the Elite Hybrid pads from Dekoni. You keep the same sound signature but gain a bit more bass slam and sub bass prowess.

I already know what I could buy when the original pads in Sus are destroyed. They are not flatter than the original, because I would not like to touch your ears?
I just double checked, they are roughly the same width.I already know what I could buy when the original pads in Sus are destroyed. They are not flatter than the original, because I would not like to touch your ears?

They were not as deep as the OEM Sus pads and my ears did hit so I returned them. YMMV
Thanks a lot for your answers everyone ! As i said i'm rather interested in trying to find some driver tubes that are not too old or hard to get because with so many replicas, coloured differences to watch out and so on i'd rather buy something new to avoid buying something disappointing. But i'm just browsing at the moment, still enjoying the Performance stock tubes right now but i know that at some point i will have to buy something better. Envy arrived a few weeks ago brand new so i have some time ahead before they fail on me lol
WE new production for that type of tubes might be interesting, will see when they release it but i'm pretty sure old stock will still be better lol

Man these Melz 1578 63' are kicking hard with the Elrog ERs while being very detailed, incisive. It's brightness cuts through the slight ER bass mid bloat. Very nice combo.
Damn ... it's impossible to get rid of good tubez. They are all so nice.
