Hi

So I have both the HE-400 and the HD650 running off a Bifrost/lyr (stock tubes) and I can help but feel a bit disheartened with the performance of the HD650. I just feel that everything on the HD650s just sounds more muffled, less, refined, less detailed. The only thing I think the HD650s do better with is small scale female vocals.

I picked up the HD650s after purchasing the HE-400, simply because the HD650 has a bit of a ledgendry status in the head-fi community

It should be noted that the HD650s I own are the older version with the black cover, which some people feel have a more muddied sound, but I am inclined to believe the difference is reasonably minor.

Any thoughts fellow head-fi'ers?

It should sound more muffed then the HE-400 simply because the HD650 has always sounded veiled, the HE-400 slo has a faster driver and is planar magnetic. It could also be that the HD650 has no synergy with the Lyr Combo. Try the HD650 with out an amp straight out of your computer and see if it still sounds muffled.

That is kind of how the HD650's, especially the older version sound. They are a bit slow and laid back. Some love it, some hate it.

I actually prefer the HD650's to the HE400, I like the laid back vibe of the 650's more I guess. I think I'll give the HE400's another month and then decide whether I want to get rid of them or not.

Not on topic, but just so it's easier for others to search down the line, your thread title reads "HD50s" instead of "HD650s". I wish I had the 650s to help you out though!

Thanks, noticed my typo, corrected.
