Favorite "Sleeper" Album/Band?

James Burton & Ralph Mooney - Corn Pickin N Slick Slidin. Not a sleeper in its day, but I don't find many people these days who are familiar with the brilliant recording.

No-Man

Known to many in Porcupine Tree circles as a Steven Wilson "side-project", most don't realize No-Man was Wilson's main project and Porcupine Tree was a side-project that developed into something bigger.

The sound varies a bit over the 10+ years, but generally there's an experimental/jazz feel running through many of the albums, with soothing vocals and some trademark Steve Wilson guitar work. Vocals are handled by Tim Bowness who has a distinctive vocal style similar to David Sylvian.

I've heard comparisons with Unforgettable Fire-era U2, but No-Man have been predominantly compared with Talk Talk. I think they are distinctive enough to stand on their own though.

Contributors include Robert Fripp (guitar), Ben Coleman, Steve Jansen (drums), Richard Barbieri (keys) and Theo Travis (flute & sax).

Highlights of the No-Man back catalogue for me are 'Flowermouth', 'Returning Jesus' and 'Together We're Stranger'. Many of these are available at mid-price. They've just released a Anthology which is a very good starting point and includes a cover of Nick Drake's 'Pink Moon'.

I haven't, and I lived in the Valley for 11 years! D'OH! I'll have to look them up and give a listen. Even though they're well known, I'll have to admit that my fav "local" AZ band is the Gin Blossoms. Their popularity spiked in the mid '90s when I was in Mesa and their music always brings back great memories for me.

Dredg (listening to "Catch Without Arms" right now!)
Porcupine Tree (In Absentia and Deadwing being my two faves)
And I guess you could also consider Muse a sleeper...

Porcupine Tree and Muse sleepers? Maybe here in the States, but both bands, particularly Muse, are very well known in Europe.

I love The Go! Team. Hardly known over here ( I saw them mentioned maybe once on these boards) but probably much bigger in Europe.
Also got a thing for Bran Van 3000...would any Canucks happen to know what if anything is going on with them???
And for world stuff you can't miss with Orchestre National de Barbes..Just great stuff.

I've got that one...surprisingly good.

My latest favorite sleeper album is James Hunter - People Gonna Talk
