I live in the midrange!
I am gaining an ever greater appreciation for any musician who can capture the energy of a live concert on an album while maintaining at least some resemblance to the studio cuts. In fact, some of my favorite live albums actually seem to surpass their studio cousins. Some of my favorites:

Genesis - Seconds Out
Bob Segar - Live Bullet
Dave Matthews Band - Red Rocks
U2 - Rattle and Hum
The Who - Live at Leeds
Depeche Mode - Songs of Faith and Devotion LIVE
Kiss - Alive!

and fast becoming a favorite...

John Mayer - Any Given Thursday

What are some of your favorite live albums??

A favorite of mine is LIVE IN JAPAN '65 by The Ventures.

The album's twenty-nine instrumental tunes include old hits like Telstar, The Lonely Bull, Slaughter On Tenth Avenue, Walk Don't Run '64, and Apache.

Back when I was into this, KISS, Alive II was my favorite album. My parents got it for me in 1977 when it came out and I just wore that thing out. In fact, I still have it sitting at their house on LP. Don't be impressed, I also have a stack of disco records from that era also.

I'd also have to give the nod to Neil Young's Unplugged performance. I really disliked his music before getting that album.

On the commercial side of things:

um....Portishead: PNYC!

Yeah, that cd rocks.

Depece Mode: 101

This is some great, i recently picked it up on vinyl...sweet!

Usually commercial live albums suck, because their a mix of various dates and tend to cover the popular songs and fade in and fade out inbetween tracks which truly sucks.

And they tend not to be mixed well too!

James Taylor -- Live (1992 double CD). This is one of the best-recorded live albums I've ever heard. Whoever did the engineering should have won an award.

John Mayer -- Any Given Thursday. Another double CD.

Rush -- Different Stages. Double CD. The very best recording of 2112 is here, amongst others.

Not on an album, but should be: Radiohead's performance on Saturday Night Live, back in 2000 when Kate Hudson hosted. They did "The National Anthem" from Kid A, with a jazz ensemble backing them, and it was so much better than on the album -- a HUGE amount of energy. Most of the audience probably hadn't heard Radiohead before, but they went bonkers at the end of the song. They also did "Idioteque," though it didn't have the amazing impact that "The National Anthem" had.

Eva Cassidy "Live at the Blues Alley"
Emmylou Harris "Emmylou Harris and the Nash Ramblers at the Ryman"
