Seems like it would be difficult to get just right. To hot on the top end and the Violin will be slightly painful, not enough or too much low end and it may sound veiled. What's your favorite headphone or headphone/amp combo for feeling the texture and emotion of a solo violin or Cello?

The usual suspects: K-501, K-240DF, K-1000, DT48, HD-600, and HD-800. All of them have slightly different flavors, but they're all damn good with strings.

Also, pay attention when the Stax Mafia shows up - 'stats can do a terrific job with strings but I don't have enough experience to make a recommendation. I can recommend Quads if you're looking for speakers. The ESL-63 does wonderful things.

As for an amp, go with tubes. I'm partial to the Moth Si2A3 for strings.

My AD900 sound pretty darn sweet for violin and cello and I like my RWAudio amp with it's current opamp setup as it add some warm to the headphones, but also like the AD900 straight out of my Ipod as well especially for istruments like the violin.
