Number two varies quite a bit, but Bach is steadfast at number one. Don't get me wrong, Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, Bruckner, Mahler, Shostakovich are all geniuses, but Bach is a GENIUS

Bach for godlike genius, but Shostakovich is my actual favourite. A perfect balance of the emotional and the intellectual.

another vote for Bach (shouldn't this be a poll?): it took me a while to get it, but once hooked there is no coming back...
BTW the recording who started my Bach infatuation is the Mass in B from Gardiner & co (still one of my favorites)

Franz Schmidt.

Oh, I love the likes of Mahler, Prokofieff, Brahms, Puccini, Elgar and countless more. But the one composer who stands above the others is Schmidt. Can't explain it. Is he the greatest? No, just my favorite. Das Buch mit sieben Siegeln and the 4th Symphony are just incredibly moving and beautiful.
