Fathom from Campfire Audio - Official Thread

I'm excited to announce my review of the newly announced Fathom is now live!

In essence, the Fathom represents an evolution of the Andromeda formula that feels highly familiar yet changed in a meaningful way that earns the new title. Consider the Fathom a spiritual successor to the Andromeda 2020 with a similar tuning, updated housing from the Emerald Sea and new 6-driver platform.

The bass and midrange are almost identical but the treble has been enhanced with a darker, cleaner background and superior extension. In addition, the bass extends slightly better, offering more slam and weight. Altogether, a nice update to the vanilla Andro variants with a more authentic treble note timbre, improved imaging and greater dynamics.

The Fathom appeals to those wanting an upgrade over the previous Andromeda variants and successfully fills the gap created by the more radically changed Emerald Sea as Campfire Audio’s premium all-rounder. Full review here :)

I love these diagrams. It’s a shame CFA stopped publishing them after the 2020 variants

Fathom uses a blend of both Sonion and Knowles BAs
Do like the new design language! Is there a purple cable option with that? However, I am curious how these compare to the supermoon and bonneville? The supermoon is the same price category - whilst being a single planar driver and the boneville is priced slighty higher, but is a DD+3BA setup. What is the difference in sound/ intended purpose between the models? Also curious on the why for 6BA's - where other combinations tried (e.g. DD/ planar) or was the objective from the start to keep to an all ba architecture?

Congrats on the launch, @CFA Chris - can't wait to try in a few days a CanJam!

Thanks @Sebastien Chiu! Really excited for the show! We've got a big lineup coming so there's a lot to check out :)

Do these use CA’s TEAC tech? Are these the dual diaphragm Knowles BAs like in the Emerald Seas?

Fathom's internals didn't necessitate the use of TAEC this time around, using a more straightforward driver routing. Fathom also uses two custom Knowles single diaphragm BAs for the highs, with two Sonion mids, and two custom dual-diaphragm Knowles BAs for the low-end.

More BA drivers than the Andromeda ES but cost less?

Hi @Tristy! While it can seem a bit counter-intuitive, driver count is one of many factors that go into it, and our goal is to deliver excellent value to our customers.

Thanks! We're really happy with the aesthetic and performance of Fathom! Our goal with our lineup is to offer as much diversity and flavor as possible, so that there are different is something that will connect with everyone. We want to have earphones that are jack-of-all-trades, everyday earphones as well as specialists that you can reach for for a specific genre or experience.

Fathom comes into the broader lineup of our earphones and at this time, essentially fills the gap left by the classic iterations of Andromeda, while being fresh and different enough to be a standalone product. Fathom offers that signature 'just north of neutral' profile while bringing accuracy and incredible technical performance. Whereas something like Bonneville has a warmer, smoother, more emotional signature, bigger, heavier bass etc. Bonneville and Fathom are both capable in terms of versatility for tons of genres, but are nudged to towards opposite sides of the emotional/analytical spectrum.

Supermoon's planar flavor really differentiates it from our broader lineup, giving it unique timbre, top-end resolution, bass texture, etc.

You may also want to check out this thorough breakdown fro Ryan over at Everyday Listening, lots of great insight and some comparisons here as well.

I'm going to be doing some A/Bing in prep for CanJam this week, so I should have some more notes for folks soon!

Thanks for getting back so quickly and for sharing Ryan's review - which is quite thorough.

Ah ok, that is interesting, so a more analytical, less-coloured approach.
By technical performance, I assume that encompasses both detail retreival and soundstage, i.e. more studio focused in presentation.

Look forward to learning more on this in the coming days! :)

Hi Chris,
how does the fathom compare to ARA?
thanks

Hi Chris,
how does the fathom compare to ARA?
thanks

I'll have to find some time to A/B these directly. My initial feeling is that Ara has a pluckier bass response and not as much low-end impact as Fathom. Ara will also have accented high peaks and more sparkle. Fathom is more neutral than Ara, but I think Ara might come across as more crisp/sparkly due to the relative positioning of its top and low-end.
