Subject line pretty much encapsulates it. Looking for a pair of headphones for working out (running, weightlifting) for less than $100. Will consider on-ear and ear-bud types; IEMs provide too much isolation when running in the city.

All advice appreciated.

Try the Senn MX685, they are on-ear, ear bud types, not in-ear. And they were (it seems) designed for the sporting type, extra frame support on the ear, They also offer other earphone that have ear clips, but not too sure if they are as sweat resistant.
Sony also released some sports headphones called MDR-AS200 although i'm not too sure if they are ear buds or not.

I have the sony MDR- as200 and they sound pretty good . They have nice highs and a good base you will think you have a over the ear headset on , I was surprised at the sound . Once you have them around your ears they arn't going anywhere . I can wear them all day while working ,they are very comfortable . They are great for under a motorcycle helmet also because they are so flat . If you want to use it to answer a phone call you can find a old pair of earbuds that have a mic in the cord and the ends that go into the ear buds just cut that line and solder the lines to a 3 wire 3.5 female jack . This little wire setup comes in handy to use on any 3 wire 3.5 headphone connection . There is a photo showing how flat they are .
