Ex70's vs Ety's
Jun 30, 2002 at 12:16 AM Post #16 of 38
Today - after a few days of living with my Etymotic ER-4S canalphones driven by my Headroom Total Airhead 4.5V headphone amp, I decided to try my Sony MDR-EX70LP 'phones through my TAH... what a pile of $#@%!! Those Sony EX70LP's will NEVER grace my ears again! NEVER!!! Reeeeeeally boomy midbass with little if any deep bass extension, harsh sibilant tinny scratching etchy glassy spitty (in a crappy way) treble - and (for that craptacular Grand Canyon effect) WHERE ARE THE MIDS?

Screw Sony; buy Etys!

Oh, did I say that the EX70LP's sound much worse than my full-size Sennheiser HD 280 Pro's, too? (Here's a hint: I paid half as much for the EX70LP's as I did for the HD 280 Pro's - but the "half-priced" EX70LP 'phone sounds about six times worse than the HD 280 Pro 'phone.)

And I think those 'craptacular' Sony V700DJ's - boomy and sloppy as they are - still sound better than my EX70LP's!

No matter how much you mod the EX70s, they'll still sound like Mariah Carey with laryngitus after having 20 cigarettes when compared to the ETYs (well, the 4Ps in my case)

BUT, that being said... we can't be elitist ~ If you've never heard the ETY sound, then the EX70s, whilst sounding bright and boomy ARE generally acceptable... its only when you make that evolutionary leap that you realise just how bad they are!!

I have the Etymotic ER4P(S) and the EX70's and I have to agree with the other posts about the differences between the two. However I do have a use for the Sony's - late night listening to classical music at very low levels.

The Sony's awful treble and bass response is tamed considerably at very low levels and they really are comfortable in the ears when in bed. They don't leak sound and the additional bass from the Sony's doesn't sound bad at really low levels.

They are generally pretty piss-poor phones but they do have a use and to a degree I'm glad I bought them for this reason alone.

I just don't have the DIY modding dexterity as many of you Head-Fiers.

My software mod doesn't require any DIY sk1llz and IMHO ought to sound better than any hardware mod

You mean your Ety frequency "mod"?

Hey, why the quotation marks? It's a mod too, and a darn good one at that if you ask me!
