BTW, here's the brochure for the Etymotics ER6 that led to all this:
http://www.etymotic.com/images/PDF/er6info.pdf

(although I'd been trying to do something like this long before this came out--if you search for the keyword 'EQ' and specify me as poster you'd find a long history...

)

So you can do the same thing to all the other phones they tested. But you can see in there that the EX70s came the closest to the etys in frequency response to start with... so EQing the EX70 is less demanding of the EQ and your headphone amp than the other alternatives.

(the 2nd one on the list is the EX70, and looks like the one at the bottom is Koss the Plug... and the 2nd-last one looks like the Sony NC10--but really, what ARE the two in the middle?

redshifter: this is the 'smiley' with the Chinese character for 'poor' (as in no money) that taipeileviathan was talking about.

I assume you're putting mp3s or some other compressed format files on your player. You could be encoding the files yourself, in which case you can add the EQ to the wavs before encoding, or you could be downloading them from the net (you naughty boy you

) in which case you could use the multiband EQ (that you may or may not have

) on your hard drive player.

Actually you can run any file that winamp can play through the EQ step and come out with a standard wav file, but then you have to re-encode it again, which would lead to more artifacts.

OTOH, if you are using uncompressed files on that huge 20gig drive or whatever, you can follow my instructions to the letter

Well, that avatar reminds me of one of those chinese burgers. Hard to describe in english, but it looks like a "bao zhe" (mandarin)

Anyways, yeah most of my music are *hesitates* downloaded... but i don't think my parents would let me buy a player if I have all those CDs in the first place!

And the Zen has a FOUR band eq. Hmm, that doesn't look too "customizeable."
