etymotic 6i isolator vs ER 6

It's no contest 6i......then you may want to add an amp eg. Xin Supermini which will enhance entire spectrum (especially bass) and if you are a closet basshead.......use the jumpers for his bassboost that is standard on the amp.
......a "sorry for your wallet" is always appropriate

Cire, it's interesting that you list Ety 6i and k501 as owned and yet deign to recommend those SuperFi and Shures.......actually his question was between the two Ety choices.....with no necessary prediliction to badbassheadedness.

It has better bass, and lesser highs (according to what I read). However the ER6 is clearer and a bit more precise (that's why I am gonna buy that one and not ER6i, not a basshead at all, and wouldn't matter having to EQ).

What instruments would you say get affected by that emphasis? Is it harsh with piano for example? Thanks

Is that what is called sibilance?
Is it noticeable in chamber music? String quartets, etc? Or mostly on human voice and cymbals? Anyway, doing some EQ should solve that problem right?

yeah I guess it is sibilance. Dont worry they'll sound great for chamber orchestra's especially since you're not a basshead (the er6 doesnt like too much bass). You can easily fix the problem(if you actually see it as a problem) with EQ no worries.

Just letting you know of what you could experience using them.

My er6 came in today, so I thought I'd resurrect this thread with a few remarks:

1) First of all, some people claim the iPod doesn't have enough juice to properly power the ER6. This isn't true -- there is enough to run them at ear-splitting-n-damaging levels. An amp might make them shine better, but for me at least that ruins the point of carrying an iPod.

2) The lower end is not all that spectacular with the flanges, maybe because I can't get them in my ears right. Once I figured out how to get those damned foamies in my ears, though, I get *plenty* of bass for my tastes, even with rock. Drums sound realistic and bass lines aren't interfering with the music as they often do with bass-friendly cans.

3) The clarity in the mids and highs is incredible. I'd put them on par clarity-wise with full-size cans like my old AKG K-501s and Grado SR-60s, but they certainly don't get the soundstage of the AKGs (for classical, voice) or the in-your-face dynamics of the Grados (for rock). My reference songs are several recordings of the Cantus men's ensemble, Mark Knopfler's "Sailing to Philadelphia" album, and a Gunter Wand/NDR recording of Beethoven's 6th symphony, in Apple Lossless.

I mistakenly ordered the er6 instead of the er6i and am too pressed for time to exchange them, but I think I'm happier with the er6. I've never heard the er6i, but just looking at its response curve makes me think that for my listening (classical music and soft rock) the er6 are more suitable. I reccommend them highly to others with similar taste -- despite the overall dislike many have for them.

Thanks for your post. Did you find some sibilance at all? Did you burn them in? Have you tried them with piano recordings? Thanks.

Hempcamp -- I wouldn't say "dislike" ... they're just not for everyone. I didn't realize there was a sonic difference in the ER6i's when I got my ER6's. Brilliant clarity, and isolation (when the fiddly fit is just right). But overall I prefer my Shure E3C's. Don't get me wrong, my ER6's were a quantum leap for me beyond the Sony EX 71's and EX 51's ... I would, however, recommend the ER6i's, which I haven't even heard (!?), over the ER6's -- for most listeners.

Your comments do add value to the dialogue, however. And they make me want to swap the foamies for the weird flanges on the Etymotics -- maybe over the holidays I'll get around to that.
