Hi Guys & Girls,
What are the essential Wilco and Pixies records. I plan on making a little trip to the record store tomorrow and I really want to get me some quality records.

If there is one thing I hate more than anything else it is badly mastered albums. So in order to make the right choice I thought I would ask you wise guys

I have been listening to both bands online, but the quality is so bad (youtube/online stores) that I couldn't tell if they were mastered correctly.

Cheers!

fortunately for you, yankee hotel foxtrot is among the better mastered albums these days. definitely get that, the other wilco releases have not been very impressive as far as i'm concerned. the vinyl version sounds great.

for the pixies, the previous poster got it. only their first 2 albums are really regarded as being necessary...but they are both great! somewhat different styles though; the first is a bit more raw, i suppose, though the 2nd one also has some of those elements in it.

You really cannot go wrong with any Wilco release in my opinion. Ghost is Born is probably my least fav. but I still like it. Their live album "Kicking Television" is good and gives a nice overview. YHF is def. their crowning achievement, but look at Summerteeth and AM as well.

I love every Wilco record, but YHF is a good place to start. I've given Being There a few listens recently and it still holds up well.

Surfer Rosa and Doolittle are the classics. I recently picked up the Surfer Rosa SACD and am eagerly awaiting the same treatment for Doolittle.

Thanks a lot for the fast replies everybody!

I think I will go ahead and pickup Surfer Rosa, Doolittle, YHF, and maybe the others too who knows depends on what they have in stock

Once again thanks a lot for the recommendations

Surfer Rosa and Doolittle are the pat answers. While you can't go wrong with either of them I would also strongly suggest that you consider throwing in another $8 and get Come On Pilgrim. It was made from a demo tape and features some of their best songs, and most of them never appeared on any subsequent studio album (except for Vamos, which is also on Surfer Rosa). The sound quality is great, and I just couldn't imagine being without songs such as Caribou, Isla De Encanta, Ed is Dead, The Holiday Song, Nimrod's Son, I've Been Tired, or Levitate Me.

Pixies: (1) Surfer Rosa; (2) Come On Pilgrim; (3) Doolittle; (4) Trompe Le Monde; and (5) Bossanova.

Wilco: (1) Summerteeth; (2) A.M.; (3) Yankee Hotel Foxtrot; (4) A Ghost Is Born; (5) Kicking Television; (6) Being There; and (7) Sky Blue Sky. All IMHO etc. Also, check out Uncle Tupelo.

seconded, it's an under appreciated gem and very different than YHF. Casino Queen and Passenger side are gems.

If you really want to get to the "roots' of this check out any of Uncle Tupelo's albums. Their album, "no depression" arguably kickstarted a genre of the same name. Anodyne is the best album from them however

Two great bands, Wilco and Son Volt came from UT

Just got home from the stores and I was able to get the Surfer Rosa CD where all the Come on Pilgrim tracks are on as well for like $15. Besides that I picked up Doolittle and Wilco YHF. YHF was the only Wilco record at the store

Right now I am listening to Surfer Rosa, just one great track after another
