Hey guys,

I currently have a pair of NIB Etymotic HF2's and I'm trying to decide if I should sell them unopened and buy a set of ER4's. I read all of the old threads and really didn't want to start a new one but figured you guys might have some specific advice.

I have listened to a pair of HF2's for about 2 years now and I just received my final warranty replacement. I really like these earphones for their their clarity and detail ect. I also just bought some Earsonics SM3's, and though I've been pleased, I would like the ety's to be an alternative for certain listening situations. The Etymotics and SM3's are to be pretty much my only IEMs for awhile.

I also have a Fiio E10 DAC/Amp but honestly don't really expect to spend much money any time in the near future on a better one. Not sure if this will be enough to drive the er4s...Although as I type this I'm already entertaining the idea of a used Headstage Arrow

I don't think you'll have any issues driving the ER4 using the Fiio E10. I would get the lower impedance ER4P; that gives the option of getting the higher impedance adapter later on. In any case the Ety ER4S are great classics. I still have mine (lost my first ER4P but got it replaced with the ER4S) and they're some of the most neutral IEMs I have ever used, with great bass definition once a proper seal is attained.

I have the E10 and er4p's, and I have quite enjoyed the setup. I prefer using them with my p to s impedance cable though. I find that using the bass boost switch in conjunction with the s version of the Etymotics makes for a very enjoyable listening experience, and the E10 has plenty of power for the ER4S. Like Lex2 said, I would recommend getting the er4p instead of the er4s because it gives you the chance of getting the s adapter cable and getting the sound characteristics of both IEM's. I can't say anything about the HF5 as I haven't had the chance to listen to them.

Thanks for the advice. I am planning on getting the ER4p and then getting one of those ebay p to s adapters. Any word on if the ebay adapters are as good as the etymotic ones?

I've never listened to Etymotic's impedance cable, but the one I have been using seems to do the job nicely, and the build quality is solid. This is the one I have:
