EQing e500?

Dec 7, 2006 at 7:10 PM Post #17 of 47
I've been listening to my e500's non-stop now for 5 days and I don't want to take them out. My initial disappointment is gone- I was just REALLY REALLY REALLY used to my e4s.

Alas, I have yet to recieve my Hornet. But I've not checked the mail yet today and I am really hoping it's in the mail today. I got the red one, I really like the look of it. At first I really wanted the green one because it is so cool, but I thought the red looked a little more classy.

Congrats! Make sure to take pics. I'd love to see more of the red.

Sounds like I've found the thread where all the E4 owners are ^_^

My rig:
- E4
- 1st Gen 4GB Nano, no EQ
- All music is mp3, majority Lame -V2 VBR or 320kpbs CBR
- No amp or funky cables (not quite reached audiophile status)

I listen to most types of music except country and metal. Main genres are chillout, jpop, cpop.

I've had my E4's for a year and love them but feel it's time to upgrade. I'd toyed with the idea of going custom (Westone ES2 or UE10-Pro, but frankly I think I can justify the cost and the whole law of diminshing returns) but the e500 seem a much better and more affordable bet.

Hopefully those who've upgraded can help answer my questions:
1) Will I notice the difference given my rig and type of music?
2) How does the fit of the e500 compare with the E4?
3) Are the tips that come with the e500 interchangable with those of the e4 since they look very similar?
4) Will I need to get an amp to really get the most out of the e500?

Thanks in advance!

Wow... even out of the box the upper registers are MUCH better. Not even thinking about the EQ.

1) Yes...very big difference
2) Almost exactly the same since they use the same tips. The E500s sit more flush with the ear after they are in...Extremely comfortable.
3) Yes. Refer to #2
4) Not totally necessary, but a good portable amp + lineout makes a BIG difference with the E500s, IMO. Found that without my Hornet/lineout, I preferred using the EQ with the E500s.

1. Yes, even out of the headphone jack I found a marked difference (5.5g video).
2. The e500s are wonderfully comfortable they nestle perfectly into your ear and are perfectly comfortable to lay with.
3. The e500 has tips that are interchangeable with the e3 and up. (and various other companies)
4. This is an issue of contention for some people, but IMO there's a dramatic improvement with the e500 with my Hornet (even with no burn-in). Most headphones benefit from better amplification, e500s included.

Haha beat me to it jLai

Thanks JLai and Binaural Fusion for your replies. Santa will be bringing me some e500's hopefully...

I know nothing about amps or portable amps - if I was to get one, are there certain amps that go well with the e500? Or is it more than just pairing an amp with an pair of earphones (i.e. got to consider source as well)?

Since you're running it off of an iPod...I'd highly suggest a lineout dock. That in itself will "uncongest" the music. I tried pairing the E500s with the LitteDotMicro+, but the changes were minimal. Paired with the RSA Hornet, it really was night and day for me. Beyond that, I'm unable to give any advice, as those are the only two amps I've heard it with. Becareful looking for information as some people tend to like to make assumptions about amps that they have never even heard before (yeah...you know who you are).

The Stereophile one is recent, so I think it was an M. The 6-moons one I believe was a regular Hornet.

Heh...9001...the first production Hornet evar!

**Of course, not counting the prototype that Charles has**
