I'll post some in the next day or two. I've rediscovered all my headphones- even the e4 sounds pretty sleek on the Hornet.

Just saw the prices for a hornet... 350USD!!
Combined with the price of the e500's, I'd be in Custom IEM territory...

Lol, I'm not sure you can think about it like that... if you were getting custom IEMs you would need an amp just as much or more than the e500's. Headphones of such sensitivity are REALLY unforgiving with bad recordings/ bad sources. Even with the e500's out of the headphone jack I found I could no longer listen to some recordings (poor Jimi- but your recordings suck). I'm sure the problem would only be exacerbated by the more revealing headphones.

LOL, you were very right. I'm still waiting for the burn-in I'm at 75 hours so far. The Hornet is so well built, and it seems quite a bit smaller than pics lead me to believe.

Ok, this is probably the best thread to ask in, since most of you here upgraded from the e4 to the e500. The e500 apears to be much larger than the e4, so how is the comfort as compaired? How do you like the fit into the outer ear as compaired to the e4 also?

it seems to fit my ear better, in that it finds its "resting place" on my ear, as opposed to the e4, which just seems to hang in limbo (none of the e4 touches my ear except for the sleeve itself). i, however, find the e4 to be more comfortable over the span of ~5 hours. i have to take the e500 out of my ear for a minute or two every hour or so, or they get uncomfortable. then again, i've only had my e500s for about 10 days so it might just take some getting used to.

I totally can related to this, I get kind of a burning feeling on the top of my ears, and in my ear canal (this sounds bad- but it isn't). I do exactly the same thing I take them out for a minute or two every couple hours. The feeling is exactly the same as when I first got glasses, and my ears/ nose weren't used to having constant contact with anything, but after a couple weeks I didn't even notice them. I didn't notice this with a e4s because the cord got abraded and slightly over time and wasn't as shiny, sticky, and malleable as the new e500 cord.

all right, so im not the only one with this, and you also have the same remedy as i do, which is kind of funny. i think i usually say ill take a break for 20 minutes but only a minute passes by before i want them to go back in. anyway, i love them.

It's really interesting reading all the people who were initially disappointed with their e500s. I loved them from the moment they went in. But I was coming from Ety ER4P's. I had previously tried Shure's e3c and e5c, but found them harsh and immediately wanted them out of my ears. So I can see if you really loved that harsher, more aggressive sound, you maybe would initially feel like something was missing from the e500s.

I'm continually so amazed by the e500s...straight from my iPod 5G (256 AAC VBR). To the point where I'm curious to try things like a hornet, Ultimate Ears, or the new Super Fi's ONLY because I just can't imagine being able to achieve better sound (to my ears) from a portable rig.

Try the Hornet. If you find me wrong, Ray has an excellent return policy. I'm willing to bet you'll keep it.

I'm really curious as to how the Tomahawk pairs with the E500s. Can't wait to see what people say about that combination.

I think that it's natural to be initially disappointed with a set of IEMs since expectations are usually very high (why else would you have bought such an expensive item? :-), or at least I'm usually initially disappointed until I find the right tips, EQ setting, etc. to suit my ears. I don't think that there's any such thing as a perfectly neutral IEM out of the box because coupling to each individual ear is different. I can understand some of the criticisms leveled at the E500 (after all all phones always end up being critiqued in one way or another) but for me if I just boost the highs just a little bit and do a similar mid-bass cut to tighten things up I find that the E500 are about as close to perfect as I can imagine. Certainly not the most neutral IEMs available but far and away the most musical and fun to listen to. The Etys are my second choice and have wonderful transparency and detail, but lack the foot tappin' fun that the E500 delivers in spades. The E500 do need some EQ to show their best but after the tweaking the user is amply rewarded.

I am currently using E500 with Hornet M and I can say that the sound is great. Funny thing, I never tried it directly out of headphone out. I always used it with Hornet. The highs are good to my ears, nothing to complain about. I have to admit that currently E500s take most of my listening time, not the HD650s. I think they are on the same level as far as the sound quality goes and although HD650s provide a bigger soundstage, E500s are not short in a noticable way in any area that you can think of. They are also better to fall asleep, since HD650s make me sweat a bit and can be too big for bed. They have advantages over custom IEMs in retaining their resale value, because customs don't have any

Before I forget, I never played with EQ, since to my ears, the combination I am using is close to perfect (one needs a margin for absolute perfect, right

). However, I cannot imagine that it goes better in a portable setup. Let me say this: I was looking for the best non-custom iem and considering triple.fis and E500s. I even placed a pre-order on the triple.fis (back then nobody knew that UE will be pushing the release date to next year). Then I had the chance of listening to E500s and I said to myself that getting triple.fis will be gambling, since I E500s are sounding great to my ears. That day, I canceled the preorder and pulled the trigger on Shures. I am enjoying those IEMs since then.

Hope this helps.
