I am looking for an entry into audiophile territory with a decent headphone. There is hardly any available in India, though. I have shortlisted philips SHP8900 which is listed in philips india website for the equivalent of about USD90. Any opinions? How does it compare to something like a GRADO SR80 or Sennheiser HD555/595. I use COWON D2 and currently use a Xtrememac FS1/Creative EP-630, which I find not good enough. Please help.

I have no experience with the Philips but I love my HD595, and consider it a great entry level phone, which is at the same time easy to drive and hence good for portable players.
Check it out if you can find one.

If the SHP8900 is anything like the SHP9000, then I'd say get it. I love my SHP9000, however they need an amp.

I have HP-1000 which is elder of (what is exact opposite of successor? ) and a ms1 as you can see in my signature.

Other than rock, metal hp-1000 is better. But if you ask me they have their own places.

If you listen to rock and/or metal, the Alessandro MS-1 is a great choice for an entry level can, if you can get it shipped to India. I also have a Cowon D2, and it drives my MS-1 easily. Add some Mach3Bass to give some extra "thump" to the sound (the bass impact is enough, but sometimes I just need some more of it

) and you're good to go.

remesh audiophile quality is subjective i think.
Philips claims it is hi-fi but you know marketing makes companies write hi-fi sound to earbuds. Forget about naming confusion, list what you can get with what you can spend to hp's then use mighty search button to reviews and comments.

I suggest either the Audio-Technica ATH-AD700 or the beyerdynamic DT440.

Both headphones are efficient and easily driven without an amp, both headphones are quite comfortable. Both headphones have a sound that works with a lot of different musical types, though I will nod to the Audio-Technica as being more "well rounded" than the beyers.

Both headphones can be had for around ~$120 US.

I would recommend a MS-1, but not the SR125. With that Grado lineup I would get the SR80, but the SR60 comes with the pads and is 1/8" terminated.

What's with people recommending headphones as if everyone lived in America. Did you people even read the first post? When someone say they are from India and their choice are limited please do some research first. It's like those people suggesting grados to foreigners not realizing that they cost much more out of the US compared to other choices.

How entry level?? Some say HD595 is entry level, some say HD555 is...I wuld strngly recommend the HD555 because it is so so sooooooooo much better than anym other 50US or lower headphone that I have trried. I consider them better than the SR225 which is a terribly overrated headphone.

Dont get the SR225!!!!
