No seriously, I agree with the statement that the ALO780J sounds like 95% (or whatever, nearly indistinctable to me anyway) of he ED9, and its imo not worth it. I like my ALO's very much.

Thanks for ALL the answers everyone. I've owned Edition 9's for 6 months now and think they are great. Just thinking about adding Grado to the collection but not sure if it would be worth it. That's why i asked in the first place. Sounds like BOTH are great (i know Edition9's are) for rock, is it worth having 2 rock headphones??? I'm not sure yet.

There's nothing the RS1/MS Pro can do that the Edition 9 cannot. The Edition 9 is better in everything, be it soundstage, bass, mids, highs (ok, that's down to personal preference). Maybe get the GS1000, but since you have the K701 there's also not much of a point. Upgrade your source?

In your opinion you like the ED9 better than the RS1. In my opinion the RS1 does LOTS of things better then the ED9.

And can you elaborate?

You must be kidding. Dynamics and speed of the K701 compared to the GS1000 is like a turtle against a cheetah. And yes, you need a very good source for both the E9's and the GS1000's.

Thanks again everyone. I'll have a new source next week (hopefully), so no problems there. GS1000 actually now sounds more interesting, may be a 'bigger' difference, but for that money i could look into Stax.

Would it be possible for you to list some points?, if you don't mind. Thanks.

Edition 9 by far over the RS-1.
I've never heard the GS1000. I would love to try them, but there were so many reviews that said they were quite distant sounding, and for me rock music needs a forward sound to get me excited.

And what's up with the $1800 price for the Edition 9's?

They cost $1500 at Amazon!
And $1200 at Audio-Depot.
And regularly go for $1000-$1100 on the For sale forums here -- $1200 for the re-cabled ones.

I'm getting my GS1000 and MS-Pro in a few weeks, but I've own the K701 for almost a year now. From what I read on the GS1000 and GS1 vs. listening to the K701 on my own, K701 also lacks serious bass. I would describe K701 as tight very distance bass w/o any boom what so ever. K701 is great for classical and one of those peaceful calming music.

I digress as K701 is not the subject of the topic
