I plan on getting either of these two pairs, but which is better? I heard the E17 is better as a solo product, but with the E9 it does not compare to the E7 + E9. 
Also, i'm a bit of a newbie here (and by that, i mean an EXTREMELY new guy) so any advice would be helpful

I believe the E17 comes with a better DAC (& Amp) then the E7, so the E17+E9 would be the better combo.
When the E7 or E17 is plugged into the E9, the E7 or E17 act as a DAC only to the E9 and the E9 is amplifying the headphones.

I have heard rumors of an E19 that may be released by year's end, so it may synergize better with the new E17.

If you have the choice, definitely get the E17, I've just gotten done comparing them and the difference is night and day to me.  The E17 sounds amazing for how little it costs
