Also, I figured I'd ask this here this it is at least somewhat related to my previous post.

Is the UE attentuator nothing but a beefy resistor? I was told that it adds ~210 ohms impedance, but is that all it does? I definitely hear considerable SQ degradation when using it with the ES2 out of a portable, but I don't hear as much degradation out of a an amp - more of a difference in sound signature (softer bass/treble, less extension but a bit more clarity).

I was planning on selling my E4's (which sound fine, no hissing straight out of my IRiver H140) and pony up for the E500. Did I read somewhere in this thread that you cannot use the E500 with the IRiver without an amp????

As always, you can listen straight from a source like an iPod to, say, K1000, but it can't drive them to a PROPER level...sure, it's music, but noe the way it was intended.

n00pe, not an audio n00b, I listen to my HD650's out of my Sonic Frontier with built in Headroom amp or from my Lexicon through a Headroom Home - just didn't think I would have to drag around a portable amp to use the E500 with my IRiver.
