E500/Hornet Volume Poll
Oct 25, 2006 at 1:32 AM Post #32 of 44
I just realized that I listen just past the first hash mark as well (around 8:00). I "voted" 9:00 in error. That means the pot is way off it's sweet spot for IEMs as sensitive as the e500. Strangely that's even at the low gain setting. I can't imagine where one would be with "normal" gain.

Ps My hornet "starts" at 5:00.

Ray listens really loud too... I think some of you guys are deaf or something.

For the record, mine goes from approximately 7:00 to 5:00

I can't even vote, since I generally listen below your lowest indicated level!

Of course I have ES2 IEMs and not E500s, and I don't know how their sensitivity compares, but I'll add my comments for reference.

The M-Hornet I have starts at 7:00 and ends at 5:00.

With average ("normal") to high-level recordings I cannot go much above 8:00. With high-level recordings it's well below that, at 7:45 max.

With low-level recordings I generally cannot go much above 9:00 without discomfort or pain.

My Portaphile Maxxed apparently has a lower low-gain setting and allows me to go as high as 11:00 with low-level recordings, but not as high as 12:00.

As has been repeated in various threads, Ray said he cannot set the gain below 2.

I just checked my Hornet - 7 to 5, like most.

Dunno bout the Hornet, but with Grado's, my nano at 17 of 25, my amp starts at 7 o'clock, I listen to it at 10 o'clock. Gain is 5.7 and cans are 32 ohms.

Where your volume control is set is utterly meaningless for comparison to anything other than the same amp/headphone combination.

If you notice his post, he is replying to an another post which gives volume knob settings for another amp and Grados. Not necessarily comparable to E500s with a Hornet.

It helps to be cautious about sharply criticizing others without first double checking.

That's where I am with the Sensas as well usually. To go to 8 would mean it's low kind of recording. It happens though. I have enough room on the dial though, no channel imbalance or anything like with the much higher gain pcII.
