I was just about to buy another amp for to keep me satiated until E15/E17 comes out, but if there's going to be a head-fi for E10, then I WILL WAIT LONGER!

So yes, please let there be a head-fi discount

Hmmm... Will be keeping a close eye on this one too... :)

To be honest, I couldn't really see the point of the E7. Why have a USB DAC with a battery, when the DAC can't be used with a DAP when portable and doesn't have much more power than an iPod anyway...

A package deal on an E10 (for home) and E11 (for portable) combo sounds *much* more sensible... Hint hint!

@Feiao
Is there any word on whether future Fiio portable DACs will be compatible with iPods (such as the Fostex HP-P1)?

Thanks!
Taz.

I can answer that, at least in part. The CLAS and HP-P1 utilise a special Apple decryption chip that lets you take a digital signal from the iPod, since the iPod digital signal is encrypted in some fashion. These chips (or software/firmware, whatever) are only available from Apple and are kept under incredibly tight control so as to not leak out and cause a flood of cheap iPod compatible D/A converters, and it also gives Apple a nice cut of each device.
The licensing isn't a problem for large companies like Sony, who make many devices that take digital from an iPod, but for smaller companies like Cypher Labs it takes years, and that's for a US-based company. For FiiO, which are still a relatively small China-based company the risks (in Apple's eyes) are very high. FiiO have previously petitioned Apple for a license but haven't been able to get anywhere.

On paper it seems to make no sense, just as you say. But in practice, you never have to "remember to charge" the E7. You just "use it as a DAC" and it charges in the background as a bonus. I think that is genius.

And it does have much more power than an iPod. At least enough to make a difference.

Not to make you guys(and gals) want this more than you already do, but Mike at Headfonia got one recently and he is very impressed with it.

That might have not been your intention, but you(and Mike) have successfully increased my interest (and the urge to buy). :D Dang, this is making E10 harder to pass while waiting for E17..

Also, thanks for the update. :)

I've got a D3 and like it, but I've got a couple questions:

1. Is E7 or E10 a better dac than D3?

2. Can E7 or E10 be used as dac only? (I've got a Schiit Asgard)

I can answer your second question- yes both the E7 and E10 can be used as DACs only.

E7, E10 is USB DAC, and D3 is Coaxial and Optical DAC.
