Is there a way I can easily dye the IM716 black and not have the paint crack on the cord and such, or do I pretty much have to go ER4P for black?

I don't think any paint will resist the tension that is put on the cable. Your best choices IMO would be:

a) Put black heatshrink all over the cable.
b) Cut the cable at some point near the earbuds and solder a black cable.

I'm planning to dye my own pair soon as well. Yes, paint would be a bad idea, but dye or permanent ink should work well on that non-smooth finish on the cable. It would be harder to dye the earpieces themselves, but I think I'll leave mine white and just focus on that dayglo cable. I'm also not sure if black would really get as dark as a stock black cable, it'll probably be more of a dark grey. If you don't mind that, then the trick is really mainly just finding a way to apply it evenly so that it doesn't look like you did it with a sharpie.
