DX50 a new smaller DAP from iBasso. Spec. page 1. Impressions start on page. . .

You found the AK100 UI to be bad? Other than it being a bit unresponsive (still generally faster than the DX100) it was relatively a decent UI. It still had quirks such as no true support for playlists. Album art not showing up depending on the size of the album art embedded.
I just meant that it was a bit hard to use. If only audiophile DAPs were as responsive as smart phones...

How long ago did you try it out? Since then I'm pretty sure the UI has noticeably increased in speed via updates. It sure has with the AK120 where I don't feel the device is lagged at all (except for DSD files). It's rather responsive as a matter of fact. Most definitely compared to the 1.00 firmware. Might not be quite as fast as my iphone4 but not far from it either. Of course the UI of Apple is King.

People who appreciate sound more than convenience will deal with the UI issues.

       ^ That!

That...  is why I have lived with (put up with) the bullet-proof Sony PCM-M10 for almost three years, now:  Sound quality AND absolutely killer build quality AND other worldly bang for the buck - are all had at the expense of playback convenience.

The 96/24-capable Sony PCM-M10 has no bugs in the UI whatsoever, but it's a UI designed for recording, not for playback, so it has none of the usual DAP features, like shuffle, playlists, etc.  It can't even sort by artist, album, or song.  All you can do is manually move through folders that are sorted by the date and time they were written to the microsSD card!   To achieve an alphabetical sort, you have to backup the card to your HDD, quick format the card, sort the folders on the HDD by name with Windows Explorer, then copy them back to the microsSD card in that order.  Only then will they be displayed alphabetically when the Sony PCM-M10 scans the microSD card at startup.

I've already suffered in terms of UI convenience and there's no way iBasso (or Fiio, or HiFiMan, or anybody else) can better the Sony PCM-M10's build quality or bang for the buck, but if iBasso can deliver better sound quality via the DX50, in the same price range as the PCM-M10, I will stop using my PCM-M10 as a DAP, in a heartbeat - no matter how funky or inconvenient the  DX50 UI.

All I need is SQ at a less than ridiculous price.

What dac does the Sony use?

AK100 has an okay UI except that the screen is too small for touchscreen and lead me to always press the wrong spot...

The only thing we dont want from DX50 is to sound anything like AK100...I hope that DX50 alone sounds better than amped X3...

The Sony PCM-M10 DAC is a proprietary 96/24 sigma-delta design that's integrated into the motherboard - it's not a standalone, recognizable, name-brand chip.  In my opinion, the Line Out of the Sony PCM-M10 is just a little bright, but not at all glaring or fatiguing.  In fact, I'd say its treble is more appealing than that of the ESS9023, common to the ODAC, the Dragonfly, and some other portable DACs.  It's not as good a DAC as my CEntrance DACmini CX, nor is it as nice as my CEntrance DACport LX, but it's real close to being that good.  Lastly, I have to add that the Sony PCM-M10 Line Out has an almost undetectable graininess.  I can't hear it with my LCD-2 rev.1, which are not all that highly resolving, but I could hear it with my Beyerdynamic T1.  It's a kind of high-frequency texture that sharpens the edge of everything, but it's so very hard to notice, I feel it's almost unfair to even mention it.

Overall, the PCM-M10 > PB2 with LME49990 op-amps in L/R and dummy buffers > LCD-2 delivers a sound that competes very well with my desktop rig.  Let me put it this way - I get a lot more pleasure out of listening to my portable rig in my recliner or in my hammock in the back yard than sitting in front of the laptop listening to my more expensive desktop rig.  And I find nothing lacking in sound quality.

The DX50 will have it's work cut out for it, to beat the Sony PCM-M10 Line Out, but if you are hoping to use the Sony PCM-M10 for its built-in headphone amp, don't bother - it's just an afterthought for people who make recordings in the field or at concerts.  When they get home, they remove the microSD card and play their recordings on decent gear, not using that headphone amp.

Lastly, I should mention that the PCM-M10 offers gapless playback, but it only supports WAV, MP3, and WMA. I use 64GB microSD cards, reformatted to FAT32.

For me, the DX100 strikes a perfect balance between sound quality, ease of use and portability. Not everyone is going to agree with me, so I guess it's a good thing we'll soon have yet another option, right?

But I guess Head-Fi would be rather dull if people just used the gear that suited their own needs instead of telling others that they were wrong.

what are the biggest complaint about DX100? I only started this hobby recently... is it the battery life?

Battery life, quirky UI, Wifi issues, load times, popping when powering on and off the unit, the unit gets hot when in your pocket. If you can get past these issues then you may really enjoy the DX100s sound. The UI has improved from what I've read since I sold my unit. Portability and battery life were my bigger reasons for selling it. Although the DX100 would fully charge from a complete drain in 2 hours time. So that did really mitigate that issue honestly.

seems doesnt sound like the end of the world issues.... maybe better to get a used dx100 and an external power supply to charge in office... could be a viable option to DX50..
