I couldn't agree more. I try to have an idea about build quality, features, possible drawbacks from the reviews. Then I follow the corresponding thread on head-fi, sometimes the hype dies off after a while and you get more objective opinions. When you can actually sample the devices that are your candidates, it makes total sense. Unfortunately, for many it's impossible to do so because of the lottery of where they live. For me to fly to London or Europe to a CanJam (assuming Ibasso showcases the product of interest there) is more or less equivalent to a DC Elite or DX180. So, reviews and user opinions are the only alternatives, plus the company's track record (this is more when it comes to quality of build). I've been lucky thus far with my Ibasso products, they all suited my tastes with one exception.
For the sound, my ears are the only judge. Of course, I am biased towards certain brands, so there's little chances I will have to send back or sell some DAPs.
If it's not possible to sample it before buying or at least return it, I prefer to wait, follow threads, maybe even get it second hand. The 340 Max will be the exception, will probably pre-order as soon as announced
