I just ordered an HDTV (Toshiba Regza, if that matters), which is the first I've ever purchased. Our current TV is just a Panasonic CRT of some sort. It was great 12 years ago (when we bought it), but not as much now. Anyway, I've also purchased a PS3 (and own a 360), but our receiver (Yamaha RX V800) only supports Component (the Red/Green/Blue, etc cables) and Optical Audio, but not HDMI. The TV obviously supports HDMI, as well as the PS3, if I purchase the aftermarket cable. Now, the question is just this:

If I want to take advantage of the HDMI abilities of the TV/PS3, how would I go about connecting it. Just patch the HDMI cable from the PS3 to the TV, and just have audio re-routed through the receiver? Is there a specific way to go about this, or will component be perfectly fine?

connect ps3 directly to TV with HDMI, and then connect the optical on the ps3 to your receiver.
