Hello there,

I want to buy a new headphone to use with my tube amp. So I watched ebay, and now I was wondering if anyone could tell me te difference between the 2003 and 2005 model of the beyerdynamic DT990.

Sorry for my bad english...

yes, aas you can see the current pro model is similar to the old 2003 model, plus the coiled cable...those are the 990pro

they sound good with old rock, classical, and all "soft" kinds of music...not very suited for Extreme metal to my ears, too bass heavy...remember that you need an amp to drive those can right, i can feel the difference between driving them from a portable mp3 player and my prodigy soundcard which is not an amp but has strong output ( 1 opamp per channel )...and a better source really cleans up the muddy bass and the thin metallic vocals you hear when driven from a poor source... will do even better with a real amp...

allright, but there isn't a 2003 pro and a 2005 pro model?

As far as I get it now, there is a 2003 model, a 2005 model and a pro model (and probably a lot of other year models), right?

There are quite a few variations. I have the original DT990 600 Ohm
The DT990 Pro which is 250 Ohm
The DT990 2003: 250 Ohm
The DT990 2005: 250 Ohm
The DT990 2005 Manufaktur :32/250/600 Ohm

There may be a few more sub versions but I think that's the main ones.

Ah well, I listen very, very little to metal and I want to use them with a own built tube amp.

With a powerful tube amp the 600 Ohm versions should outshine any of the other versions.

they will be fine , then...there's only one thing that i didn't like ...for my head they are VERY unconfortable...i'm trying to find a way to mod them and decrease the clamping force...

There is no modding necessary for fit. Underneath the headband cover......the actual headband is a very bendable skeletal piece of spring steel. You simply go slowly and bend it by hand (don't even bother taking the cover off).

Also, as posted above - the 2005 (current) dt990/600ohm version is easily the best of them all.....but, you need a strong amp to power them.

Is powerful amp generally = expensive amp, or is there cheap amps which can be considered powerful enough for a 600ohm DT990?

I am completely satisfied with my tube amp after tube rolling and it was not expensive. I paid around 90 Euro for it plus some money for different tubes.
