You'll find very, very few who have tried both. I only know of three members who have, there might be a couple more.

Various posts by ssportclay, none of which seemed particularly informative IMO.

.

Important notes: the DT860 will be easier to drive than the DT880, and probably needs a 120-ohm adapter to sound its best. Unfortunately the DT860 has rather craptacular build-quality compared to the DT880 (the headband it uses is known for developing cracks).

Ask JaZZ, he owns the DT 860 at the moment and the DT 880 used to be his favourites before the HD 650. All I can say about the DT 860 is that they are very, very bright.

Personally, I'd choose the DT880 anytime.
But that's because I got a setup that probably suits the DT880 better.

If I didn't have a good amplifier, the DT860 would be the better choice.
Make no mistake, the DT860 needs good amplification to sound its best, but it's not a necessity as with the DT880.

Also, if you really like hardhitting bass, the DT860 is for you. The DT880 got a more correct and detailed bass, but might not be entertaining enough for some.

The DT880 is more comfortable to wear, and much sturdier. It got those classic, retro Beyer looks, and it's almost impossible to break.

So it depends...

The pictures make them look a lot bigger than they really are... I was rather surprised how much smaller they really were when I first bought them.

I already upgraded my corda amp CORDA HA-2 to the CORDA HA-2 MkII SE within two weeks and am planning on upgrading my $15 IC's to $300 IC's.

If I recall correctly the burn in really only takes about 24 hours at most but everybody hears differently....

I find that instruments sound more real and life like through the DT860 than THE DT880.The 860s are more detailed and soundstage is more focused and 3D.When compairing the 2,the DT880s come off as being a little congested and less dynamic or more booring. Both headphones are very good but the DT860 is better and more Beyer like.

With this in mind, I am glad that I picked up the DT880s, as to me - by your statement ssportclay, the DT860 would be overkill to me
