IIRC, all you need to do is make sure your game/program is set to "headphones" under the settings, as well as under the sound panel. if you go under there and select the device you are using, there is sometimes an enhancement that says "surround" or "headphone virtualization" turn it off.. also under "configuration" you can change usually between a few.

The conversion is built into direct sound and windows mixer.
