Is this a good choice for these headphones? I'm hoping this DAC/Amp combo is a step up from something like the FiiO E17. I like that I can pick out different tubes to influence the sound.

Jesus Christ... the DT 990s sound amazing even without an amp.

I have the DT 990 Pro paired with a Schiit Magni and Modi, they sound good though but have heard that tube amps are recommended for the 990's as it can help to smoothen out the treble. i would recommend the Schiit stack for this cans but for tube amps, i guess the Little dot MKii or MKiii will be suitable. Gd luck in the quest for the search for amps. Take your time to research on amps before purchasing, you can get more info on the particular amp on reviews and forums.

For what it is worth, I have the DT 990 Pros and a Little Dot 1+ (Voshkod tube upgrade) and they sound amazing for the price ($156).
