Consider the Shure SRH -840s. It's a little warm and not quite neutral, but it is designed as a studio monitor and is quite versatile. It is very well reviewed here and an Amazon.

It is easy to drive and does not need an amp. It doesn't have powerful bass but the bass is punchy and accurate.

My next question is, will any receiver work for amping headphones? I might have one in the very back of storage, I just remembered today. Does it need a specific headphone output? Do receivers go out of style or does their quality change much?

Have you done the mod to the HD558 to make it sound better?  If not, I suggest you do it and see what you think that way if you like it or dislike it it'll be easier for people to steer you toward something else.  Just a thought.

I haven't done the mod. I don't really like taking things apart. Especially if they are new. If I break it I am out a hundred bucks on something I could have easily returned.

Also it should be noted, I can wait for a sale if need be. So if you know any headphones that go on sale that I might like, please do say so, I'm all ears.

Speaking of all ears. Are my ears just massive or are the ear cups for the 558s just small?
