I recommend you hold on tightly with your left hand as you use your right to pop the lid off that can of worms. 
 
There is no scientific reason that cable can ever improve sound quality, but there are lots of reasons that poorly designed or misapplied cable could harm sound quality.  
 
Properly applied cable transfers the signal from one device to the other with as little impact as possible.

The question is vague. What kind of signal are we talking about here? 
And yes, I concur with the post above. Its been debated to death.
