No owning the D200 I imagine it wouldn't be. I was going to get the G7 it would be a bit beyond be but doable if I could justify it as being an excellent camera. According to dpreview they highly recommended it but with the qualifier of "just barely" that didn't inspire a lot of confidence. They call the A710IS as the poor mans G7 and gave it highly recommended with reservations...so frustrating I want something that is unabashedly highly recommended with no qualifiers except perhaps easily.
So you really like the G7? perhaps I should take a closer look at it. Or maybe a G6 or G5 they should be priced better and probably serve me just great. Thank for all the help.

Yes the G7 got a "Highly Recommended but only just" score. Didn't get too high a score on ergonomics and value:

The Olympus mentioned in this thread just got an "Above average" ranking:

Yeah I saw that as well but the above average is actually below highly recommended. Perhaps I can live with low ergonomics and value if the G7 does well in the other area's. Wow I have to get to work...the time flies when I'm having fun. Thanks for al the help and please keep it coming I'll be back tonight at 10:30 PM and pick up where I left off. Have a great day everyone.

I've owned both a Canon G (1) and Nikon D (70) series and have had great luck with both.

If I was hunting for a reasonably robust, but inexpensive camera right now I'd probably end up with a Canon S3, though the Ricoh GX100 and Sigma DP1 have me very interested. Can't wait for more details.

canon powershot sd450

Pros: Size, video recordings look pretty good if there's enough light in the background

Cons: No image stabililization, limited manual controls, flash is weak, no battery meter, bad battery life, noisy pics, pretty useless other than for outdoor close-ups

I wouldn't get it again. If I ever buy a new camera, it probably won't be an ultra-compact.

Just a thought, but if you think you may want to get into DSLRs eventually, maybe you can start with a cheaper kit. Eventually you can get lenses, or figure how far you want to go. Pentax and Olympus make some more affordable SLRs...some start at $500 for a kit: the K110D is right at $500 with kit lens, and the K100D is at $550 for image stabilization.

I think if you can get a hold of the D50, it'd be a better start than pentax/olympus simply because of the great selection of lenses you can get your hands on later down the road.

I own the D50 and I think it's a very good slr for the $$, but if you have a little more moolah, go for the D80. I see little reasons to go for the D40(x)

If you can swing $600 or so, get the Nikon D40 or the Pentax equivalent.
Otherwise, the only worthwhile compact digicam is the Fuji F30/F31fd/F40fd series, and possibly the Sigma DP1 when it finally comes out.

Nikon D200. I absolutely adore this one! Feels much better than the D100 I have also.

x2 on the D200.
Battery life isn't too good though. You'll probably need the grip.

If your budget can stretch it, 2x is even better.

Relative on par in terms of Head-Fi Dollars.
