Coldplay-YEA or NAY?

An obviously loaded question, but let's all try to remain civil.

Ugh!
I can't stand the way that guy "sings".
Whopping 3 note range, and when he can't make the high ones he jumps up to falsetto. Sounds like yodeling.
Yellow is the worst example.

there songs are all too similar and they lack any energy... i keep buying there cds and try to like them but its just not happening. After hearing "Viva la Vida" 100000 times on that damn apple commercial i decided i was going to give up on trying to like them and pass on the new album.

I would say dislike, but nothing hateful or anything. The music is ok, but I didn't really get into it because I've only heard about 1 song from them that was fairly good (I think most of their stuff is average at best). I do think the singer's voice is unappealing, that's probably where the actual dislike comes from.

Dislike because they're a post-1978 band.

Yeah for the old timers who are still stuck in the classic rock mode! Ok, so I'm kidding. But in truth, I've never paid too much attention to them, or for that matter, a bunch of other popular music during the past 30 years. It's not like I'm living under a rock, I just don't get a lot of it. More often than not, my tastes have expanded backwards in time rather than forward. Today, I listen to a far broader spectrum of music than I ever have, but still... there's not too much "today stuff" in the stuff I listen to today, if that makes any sense.

i am in love with their first album "parachutes." the new album i haven't heard, but i'm not in a big rush since it seems like a little bit of a sellout album.
i partially agree with todd r about the falsetto thing.
chris martin also had a pretty good interview in RS mag.

I like their latest album the most, but I think the press and media have severely inflated their status quota.

They aren't bad in my opinion. But their songwriting is overrated, and their technical prowess is decent, yet uninspiring. Chris Martin is a good frontman, but he's not exactly a brilliant singer (and the falsetto cop-out is a fact, as one poster pointed out).

What is unique about my opinion of them is that I am usually quite digital in my thinking, meaning I am a love/hate music fan. I don't hate Coldplay by any stretch, but I can't say I love them. In fact, I feel that way about most of their songs, with a select few falling under 'love' or 'hate.' I'd say 'like,' not 'love' is accurate on the whole.
