That's one reason I take the current mania for FaceBook and Twitter with at least one grain of salt, if not the whole shaker. At one time, MySpace was all the rage, and any card-carrying member of the digirati absolutely had to have a fullly tricked-out page. These days, it holds its own as a music hub, but that's about it. Online pundits openly scoff at it, as they would their elderly grandparents who pathetically strain to stay hip.

Is there any good reason for this? Nope. It's simply that the herd has moved on, and MySpace is just sooo five minutes ago. The substance of the service has nothing to do with it; it's all about knowing where the cool party is, and making sure to be seen striking a pose there.

The same thing will happen to both Twitter and FaceBook, and the clock is already ticking.

I did read a news article about how Twitter helped some student get out of jail in Egypt. He tweeted "arrested" and his followers came to his rescue. Nocturnal310, keep that in mind... just in case.

They let you text message from jail in Egypt?

Always find the Twitter anger funny. I certainly understand the signal-to-noise ratio concern (though I'd say the same thing about HF).

Anyway, I've got three accounts. The two people here may have some small use for are:

@blessingflix [film]

I don't myspace, facebook or anything else, but I finally decided to get in touch with other people that I normally wouldn't talk to or even meet. I never got twitter and I still don't but I'm willing to give it time. I usually tweet nonsensical stuff since I don't have anything "important" to talk about. If you want to follow me, then do but again don't expect much. I am not a social butterfly so this is a good way to interact with people without having to reveal too much info about you(ala facebook)

As an aging print publishing executive (newspapers, magazines) I use Facebook, Twitter and some other social media tools as I struggle to stay relevant professionally. Career opportunities in the print world are few and far between so I'm trying to bolster my resume by becoming familiar with these tools. If they become irrelevant I will move on to the next big thing, not because I think it's cool but because it keeps me employable.

I've set up Twitter accounts for the editorial people at my magazine. I take the RSS feeds from their blogs and feed it to Twitter. I've created my own blog and have linked it to Facebook and Twitter, not because I have anything to say but because I need to know how these things work.

I have been able to generate over 3000 followers on Facebook and about 5000 follwers on Twitter for my magazine since December. I can then go back to that audience and engage them with new content as well as run promotions on our print and digital magazine and other products or services. At some point I will also be able to leverage this audience for sponsorships or advertising from third parties.

These things are great marketing tools and allow you to speak to your audience in ways that mass media never could. Also, these tools are being adopted by the general public so if you want to reach them you have to be involved.

That being said, I have found using Twitter, Facebook and other social media tools to be fun and interesting. I've had some interesting conversations with people I never would have otherwise. I've connected with old high school friends or friends of friends I wouldn't normally engage with.

I can certainly understand the anti-social media sentiment. Over the Christmas holidays I was totally disconnected from the internet. It was a great week or so not worrying about emails, tweets and status updates.

The bottom line is these are great tools but don't let them run your life.
