I don't understand what the problem is, I can plug my turntable straight into an amp with the RCA plugs and it works just fine, am I missing something?

And that would be why my vinyls didn't sound very good. How much would this thing cost? 
I just dug up my amp, that thing actually reduces the signal you put into it.

Many turntables have a built-in phono stage. In the case of my Denon 300f it's defeatable so I can use a better one if I want.

Don't look to a price ratio with a turntable to phonostage. That's introducing an unfair comparison. A lot of turntables and phonostages are overpriced and have hype going beyond what they're actually worth.

A solid state phonostage can be awfully good and cost very little. Tubed ones can be fussy and difficult to get right. Look at the actual performance, not the price tag.

For a reasonably priced phonostage, I was happy with a NAD PP2. It gets the job done and doesn't require a second mortgage.

I found someone selling a used DB-8 w/ the optional PSU upgrade for $200 shipped.  Thought it was a good deal based on the review below comparing it against the Cambridge 640p, and Bellari VP129. I have not received it yet, but I think it may be good enough for my mid-fi turntable.

Gotta love Vinylengine.  I've gotten to the point to where I don't worry about ratios as much as just finidng something in the ballpark of what I want to spend that matches up well with everything,  More or less anyway
