I am in need of a quick advice. I need to make a birthday gift for my friend. Will an HD555 work with an iPod unamped for classical? Or should I go with something else? Your response is much appreciated.

Yes, they'll be okay. Make sure you ask which version you are getting before you buy them- some of the older models are 120ohm impedance which will be undesirable for iPods.
That said I didn't think the HD555 was great for classical, perhaps someone else here could suggest something better for your friend, so they can have a happier birthday...

Most places selling the HD555 carry the newer, 50 ohm model, which will be just fine straight of the iPod.

I agree you do not need an amp for the HD555.

An amp is not needed to enjoy the HD555 if playing from a sound card. With the HD555 classical sounds good, loud classic rock sounds better, and amping it kicks everything into high gear. However, I have my doubts about how well the 50 Ohm version would be driven from a portable devise like an iPod.

i've never tried the 555, but i do have an hd595 (also the 50 ohm version) and it plays well out of an ipod.
