i am thinking about buying a pair. i have a zune, a toshiba hd-a1 hd-dvd player, and a pioneer se-dir800c system. will i need an amp to push these? also will a hornet be a good amp for these? i am also planning on buying a rega apollo. any opinions or ideas will be greatly appreciated!

From what i've read, they can be driven decently with just a source, even a mp 3 player. But if one really wants to get the most of them, it might need an amp.

I've got the Rega Apollo and it's a great player; the first one in 20 years I know that I find affordable and listenable.

I do not have a 595 but my HD485 is supposed to be even easier to drive (32 ohms); nevertheless the bass sounds unrefined and slow straight out of a DAP.
It sounds good however straight out of my PC.

As in all cases it depends on your sources output, but in most cases the 595s do improve with an amp (low end and soundstage most obviously). In fact they continue to improve with quite expensive amps, but if you're going that route I'd go with different phones.

You definitely don't need an amp with those!

That's the consensus around here. You don't "need" one, but wouldn't you "want" one anyway

mmmm...I don't know.I have a ldm+ and I like the sound of my 595s quite a bit more without it.

just plugged a pair of HD595's into a Zune right now and it sounds pretty good... just listening to the demo songs though...

with a LDM+ it is definitely more detailed with slightly more bass extension... but overall the headphone out works pretty well.
