I know I can do a search, and I appologize in advance; but do I really need a dedicated audio card?
My motherboard right now is what controls my sound system (optical audio) and it does it very well.
Will I notice a huge difference if I change? and which would you recommend?
 
I have a budget of about $200 CAD before tax. I can be flexible if I'm swayed. Thanks~

Do you do any gaming?
 
If no, or you don't care for simulated surround sound DSPs for headphones, then the answer is likely no if you're only using optical out.

I do a lot of gaming. I mostly play StarCraft II. I would like to have true surround since my speakers are 5.1. My headset, I believe, is only stereo, which is more than enough for me.

Is your headset USB? If so, it already has a sound card built in.

Are you currently getting 5.1 from your receiver?

It's not USB. And I have a Logitech z5450. I am getting surround for the most part.

Well simulated surround on headphones is kind of nice, IMO it would make one worth it. Your results may vary, but it's kind of hard to say without trying it yourself.
 
If you decide that you do want to give those simulated surround sound effects a shot, get the cheapest card you can find that has either CMSS-3D or Dolby Headphone.
