Would be good to say where you are and what type of cables you want to make.

However, you'll find lots of information on this thread - http://www.head-fi.org/t/676402/diy-cable-questions-and-comments-thread

Is it all right to use low gauge speaker cable to build interconnects?

A lot of interconnects use very thin wire, so that itself is not necessarily a problem. The problem is that without a good cable design and materials, the capacitance can be pretty high. That can have significant effect on phono cables. For general interconnects, it is not usually a problem.

Pro audio stores usually sell good quality meterware at low prices. See if you can find a shop around you. You will likely be able to find something quite good as cheap as bad speaker cable.
