Originally posted by planar IMO, there is not much advantage on getting digital signal out of CD-ROM drive. CD-ROM drive reads audio track at 1x speed, not 40x or 50x or whatever-x speed that your CDROM has. Why? Audio CD has been developed earlier than CD-ROM for data, they only runs at 1x speed and there is no buffer or suspend storage area to re-organize the data (hence reduces the jitter). So what CD-ROM reads will be what you gets - it even includes mistakes.
Says who? I'm ripping CDs right now in EAC secure mode and it's doing over 2x. If I let it go to burst mode and let the CD-ROM drive handle the error correction I could get 8x. CD-ROMs do run at higher speeds when doing digital audio extraction. I suppose it's quite likely that they run at 1x when told to just give an analog output to the soundcard, but that's not the only possibility we have here.
