I have had a pair of used HFI-580s for about six months now and love them! They have been my favorite can so far. What are the improvements of the 780s over the 580s?

The differences are as follows:

HFI-580
Frequency range 10-22.000 Hz
Impedance 32 Ohm
Sound pressure level 101 dB
Driver 50 mm Mylar

HFI-780
Frequency range 10-26.000 Hz
Impedance 35 Ohm
Sound pressure level 96 dB
Driver 40 mm gold-plated

THe HFI-780 isn't an improvement, so to speak, over the HFI-580. They're 2 different types of headphones with different characteristics.

I think they both have the same extension into lower freq. The 580 has a bit more impact but I think the 780 has cleaner bass. If you want good raw, deep bass go for the 580.
