Did Sennheiser just reveal the Orpheus successor?

Im pretty sure this guy likes the headphone... Not positive yet though. Can you confirm that you are in fact a huge fan of this new sennheiser headphone?

I will admit the headphone has the possibility to be really groundbreaking. For all I know I could be a massive fan of the headphone, but there is just no way that the amp/dac has much of a chance of being groundbreaking. Just to many signs to give more than a 1% chance of being any good. If sennheiser sells the headphones solo I will have allot more respect for them but I think there is about a 1% chance of that as well.

If anybody at Sennheiser is reading this, here are my suggestions:

  • Do away with the automatic tube popping up on start, and away with the marble finish
  •  Make a budget version of the Orpheus 2 headphone with cheaper headband / earpad etc. material (yet keeping the driver and acoustic elements the same).
  • Design the connection of this headphone to be openly compatible with a larger amount of electrostatic and/or OTL tube amps

This way there will be a "poor man's Orpheus" available for AT MOST the cost of the HE-1000, without the pretentiously goddy features (READ: marble finish, popping up tubes) and probably the likes of camelskin pads, gold connections, rare-earth cables - and then we would be able to use our own amp or get a second-hand amp to use the Orpheus with.

As cheapskate-ish as this whole idea may sound, I believe this sort of budget-friendly luxury-sounding headphones would do two things:
  1. Massively increase the profit margin of Sennheiser with every audiophile and their brother being able to buy one
  2. Further raise the bar for HiFi consumer audio gear

@jude and anybody else who knows the username of a Sennheiser insider - maybe you can help spread the word to the company in hopes that maybe one day there will be an Orpheus or something like it that's affordable to the common audiophile

mmmm......an affordable Orpheus 2 defeats the purpose of an Orpheus. This is supposed to be the pinnacle of what is achievable and not meant to be commercialized, at least in the sense and scale of your typical headphones or headphones system. But I also agree with what you said earlier that a new version of the venerable/controversial HD 800 would make *quite* a splash as the Orpheus 2, or an entirely new "affordable" TOTL electrostat from Senn or all three.......for me, it is not a either-or proposition. Anything is possible. All in due time....I'm sure that Senn will follow this up with something exciting.....and they better be because the small guys (Audeze, Hifiman, Mr. Speakers) are doing great work. To use an archaic naval term, it is time for the big guns of the industry to fire their broadside. They have been silent for far too long. Too smug. Too complacent. Too generic. Where is their A game? Have they lost the fire in their belly? Too rich to care?

So true.

mmmm.....and to continue the rant, Sony? What the heck happened to you? Is that all you've got? Where is the pride? You were once the world's most respected name in the consumer electronics industry. A household name. The company that revolutionized the portable player with your Walkman and long before the iconic iPod. Is the spirt of Akio Morita truly dead in your company? Just Ear seemed promising (and I was truly, truly excited)  but after a few months, it is still limited to Japan, to a few flagship stores. So sad. So pathetic.  Where's the ambition? The Samurai spirit to conquer the world? And your headphones? I'm sorry but they are no longer world-class performers, much less leaders. And, by the way, as a long-time Vaio user and fanatic, you suck when you sold Vaio to another company. Rant over. So sorry.....

Sony is pretty locked in a battle with Microsoft. I don't see them getting into totl headphones anytime soon.

But every single one of their products are no longer top of the line.  Except for maybe cameras.  They still develop the sensors used by many other companies.  They've made their way up the DSLR foodchain, and I love their innovative EVIL cameras.  Their TVs used to be the best.  Their phones are pretty lackluster (most waterproof though).  Their headphones are more style (and not so much that even) than substance.  Their DAPs are pretty good it seems.  Never tried them though.  The PS4, that's still pretty good (not a gamer, so not sure).  Their stereo systems ...  I've grown out of the mega-bass stuff.  Sure I understand they are going for the majority consumer, but the company that started lots of things in the past has really fallen behind.

But you would want to be able to afford the Orpheus... do you realise what you're saying?

Actually Sony has been active with audiophile headphones such as the Z7 which some HeadFi-ers love (not my sound though). And they have been releasing very innovative IEMs / earphones as well.

But you hit on a good point - Sony needs to revive their Magnificent MDR-R10, or make a successor also! I've had the humbling chance to listen to that, and I can tell you that is the best sound I've heard in my 36-year life. Period. IMO I enjoyed it even better than Stax SR-09.

Now back to the affordable Orpheus idea - how about they make certain criteria to qualify for the "poor man's Orpheus", like proof of a low income to obtain a cheaper alternate version. This way more can get the chance to experience it, and it won't become so commercialised.

Glad you were able to enjoy the R10.  It is a very special sounding pair of headphones when driven from an optimal system with hi-rez materials.
