So at last: Ms. Krall is back with some music (seems her marriage with Elvis Costello has achieved quite something here...
) After her shallower last studio recordings, “The Girl in the other room” really is more than just a pleasant surprise. It’s among her best albums yet, and it’s certainly her most mature work. It isn’t as laid back as “Look of love” (luckily
) or “When I look in your eyes” (in fact some tunes are rather up-beat and groovy! ), it does not feature any strings
, and it shows Krall in a different musical context, which counts for both, repertoire and musicians involved. Anthony Wilson on guitar alone would be worth listening to this CD. From the 12 songs recorded here, indeed none is from the “Great American Songbook”. We have songs by Tom Waits (“Temptation” in a not so sensual mood as on Holly Cole’s Waits tribute of the same title), Elvis Costello (
), Joni Mitchell (“Black Crow”) and others, and we have 6 songs by Krall herself with lyrics co-written with Elvis Costello. And these songs really are fine examples of what modern song writing can be all about. Krall’s singing is equally fine as is her piano playing that is featured far more prominently than on almost any of her earlier albums. One tends to forget, that she was and is an excellent jazz pianist in the first place...
So, highly recommended, all the more as the sound engineering for once got it right.
