Denon AH-D5200 (little brother of the AH-D7200)

My D2000's are still kicking a long, although the headband leather is now in destruct mode! I've had to place them back in their box for now! I love the sound the D2000's produce, I'm looking at grabbing the D5200's or the Pioneer SE 5's. Both are similar price in my area.

My D2000 lasted for many years, then one day the headband and pads just disintegrated

lol my trusty AH-D2000 still looks like new except the pad looks like crap. Luckily no problem with headband at all. Though I've been having trouble finding replacement pad that sounds the same, anyone have tried the TH610 pads yet?

But yeah otherwise I'll probably just save up a bit and go for AH-D5200. But I really really really hope I won't be disappointed. The AH-D2000 set the bar too high......

^^^My head band is going that way! If you don't care for OEM pads, you can grab some after-market ones off Ebay for very little money!

Sorry not to further derail the D5200 thread, but today I bought the TH610 pad and it's VERY VERY close to the original D2000 pad.

So for anyone who's having trouble finding proper replacement pad (like me, since it's discontinued), TH610 pad will work just fine and sound almost identical.

You can either order from Full Compass, Moon Audio, or straight from Amazon Japan (which is what I did), cheers!

Hi,
I am thinking what amp or AMP/DAC combo will be better to buy for these headphones (Denon D5200) ? Any suggestions please ? Will be JDS Labs Atom enought for them, or Topping DX3 Pro ? Since I paid for Denon 380 Euro , 500 Euro is maximum what I can spend for a combo. Thank you !

Thank you for reply. I don't have any of them now :). The headphones are connected straight to motherboard and I was wondering if amplifier or AMP/DAC combo will improve the sound quality and if the improvement will be noticeable.

I find different people will tell you different things. But based from my experience, because it's so easy to drive so low powered source actually sounds more natural for me.

When I powered directly from the phone it sounds "just right", when I try USB dac/amp it usually get boosted bass and treble so while it sounds more dynamic but some of the small details gets lost. For the most part I find it just sounds "different" but not "better".

I've also tried iFi Nano Black Label and O2/SDAC, while those are respectable dac/amp but I found those 2 actually are my least favourite out of all the ones I tried.

My favourite being straight off the phone (Google Pixel 1), and Hidizs Sonata HD (dongle dac/amp). I've heard some people have good results with Grace Design M9XX and some other $500+ dac/amp, so your mileage may vary.

But from my own experience I find more power is not always better (also more money is also not always better).

I was using them with Sansa MP3 player, but I feel that something is missing in this combination. With PC is better, but I was wondering if it can be even better ... of course by spending not so much money :). Thank you Hyde00 for your opinion !

I also prefer to listen my D2000 and D5000 on lower volumes, to me they dont really stand out when blasted (treble can get little irritating especially with 2000 and I also feel like they start to distort or something?). Imo definitely more suitable for relaxed listening and chilling. AE-5 on low gain and Windows volume @100% is enough to explode my ears if im not careful, thats why I usually lower the system volume to 30-50% when im listening to them.

I found that regardless of what was driving them the D2000's treble got a bit much with higher volumes - really nice otherwise.

I drive my D5200's with the ifi micro DSD DAC a iFI iTube2 and iUSB Power connected with 2 sets of Dragon Fly audiophile 3.5 to RCA silver over copper interconnects by a company called Amplifier Surgery. And the sound is really really outstanding. The Denon AH-D5200 are excellent!

I had Denon D7000 and Musical Fidelity M1HPA/M1DAC, and after, Denon D7000+Ifi Audio micro iDSD. I sold all of them 2 years ago. For now, I was thinking initially to buy ifi micro iDSD BL, but I know that DAC part of the device is not so new and some Chi-Fi gear looks really good on paper (good DAC's, good AMP's). There are some issues with reliability, that's why it is so hard to decide. But I have enough time :). Your inputs are appreciated ! I will have more options to take into consideration. Thank you.
