DENAFRIPS 'ARES' R2R discrete ladder DAC - close up view

It's here--a day early! Kudos to Mike Lee at Denafrips Support for getting the shipment dispatched so quickly!

Will report back later, after everything gets settled.
It will take at least a week or two before it settles in on the "true" sound. There's really no rushing this and between now and then you will find the amp going through various changes. That said, if you're planning on using new cables, suggest you integrate them now, so all grows together (if that makes sense).

Oh, make sure you don't throw the warranty card out. Should be one in the box coming if you got from Denafrips.

Good luck.

Nice and solid!
Will report back later, after everything gets settled.

Ohhh congrats!

I like how they cleaned up the extra input connections and stuff at the back. They had 2 x Coax and 2 x Optical before, which I thought was unnecessary and take up space. Glad to see they've reduced it down to 1 x Coax and 1 x Optical with the addition of I²S connection.

Though....... why is Coax plug still red, why can't they do yellow like everyone else LOL (nitpick).

Otherwise looking forward to your impression!

So what's the difference between Enyo and Ares 12th-1. Not sure I can keep up...

Pricewise, a $300 USD difference.

. . . spec-wise, no apparent differences . . .

The specs currently listed for the 15th may have been simply cut-and-pasted from the 12th for the time being (just as the ENYO 15th user manual is virtually that of the [original?] Ares II).

Perhaps a strategic marketing ploy in light of Holo Audio's contemporaneous release of their new Cyan 2.

This is also a direct hit against Musician Draco, which offers I2S input at the price of Ares II/original Enyo. Enyo 15th is by far the lowest price Denafrips DAC with I2S input now.

Has anyone had, or is anyone getting, a chance to directly a/b the ENYO 15th vs. the Cyan 2?

This thread's OP @PitBul34 claimed that, in his opinion, the [original(?)] Ares II bettered the Spring [(1)?]. The OP does not stipulate exactly what characteristics of the Ares II make it subjectively better to his ears, nor did he ever have both the Denafrips and the Holo together, in-house, to do a direct a/b. [I ventured about 10 pages into this discussion to glean such information before falling victim to "thread fatigue"].

Given $1328 USD, shipped, [for the Cyan 2] I am balking in that regard.

However, should Holo Audio be so amicably inclined . . . there might be another way I could . . . you know . . .

So, kindly dear Holo, if I "May" . . .

Looking at these specs, it needs correction. None of these entry level DACs (Ares/Enio) has true balanced ladder. The lowest Denafrips model with true balanced ladder is Pontus.

If I 'May' have a word...

Holo Spring gives more Delta-Sigma sound than R2R. It is not pure R2R, as is using a 'correctional' ladder (as admitted), but it is not really 'correctional' (like a correctional penitentiary facility is not really 'correctional'), but probably used to inject ultrasonic scrambling for better measurements. In result smoothing a sound brings it close to Delta-Sigma type. For this reason is also not NOS, as there is on-board processing. A pervert brand, some will disagree, but there are also opamps in the audio path, no question about.

Denafrips do not use opamps, it can bring (theoretically) better sound quality, depends on the downstream equipment (class A non-feedback amp). For me Ares 2 was non-fatiguing, while Spring 2 L2 was. Tested in the same time period when searching for my DAC which is also non-fatiguing.

Could not get the Shanling ET3 CD transport to pass a signal through the COAX, OPT or I2S connections to the ENYO 15th. USB Audio Out no problem.

Swapped in the NuPrime CDT-8 Pro CD transport instead and am now getting signals through all three connections, although only DSD through I2S [using the i2s cable that came with the NuPrime]. DSD 256 via i2s sounds very good.

Just put the Shanling up for sale ($595/shipped) on USAM in case anyone is interested. It's a great top-loader with Philips drive and Sanyo optical head. Just too many extra features [e.g. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, MQA, MQA-CD] that I simply won't use.
